Fraport’s November 2023 traffic: Passenger and flight volumes on the rise

In November 2023, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) experienced a surge in passenger traffic, welcoming approximately 4.6 million travelers, marking a notable 12.2 percent increase compared to the same month the previous year. However, when measured against the pre-crisis levels of November 2019, passenger figures for the reporting month remained 9.4 percent lower.

The cargo sector in Frankfurt demonstrated a rebound, encompassing airfreight and airmail, as it grew by 6.0 percent year-on-year to reach 174,258 metric tons in November 2023. Concurrently, the flight volume at FRA continued its upward trajectory, with aircraft movements showing an 8.5 percent year-on-year increase, totaling 35,310 takeoffs and landings. The accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) also experienced a surge, rising by 10.7 percent year-on-year to approximately 2.2 million metric tons.

Among the airports in Fraport’s international portfolio, many reported sustained growth in passenger numbers. Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in Slovenia witnessed a significant improvement, with a 37.3 percent year-on-year increase, hosting 91,786 passengers in November 2023. Conversely, the Brazilian airports of Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA) collectively recorded a 12.5 percent overall decline year-on-year, accommodating around 1.0 million passengers. Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru experienced a 9.9 percent year-on-year increase in passenger numbers, reaching around 1.9 million travelers. Fraport’s 14 Greek regional airports collectively welcomed 784,981 passengers in the reporting month, marking a 13.0 percent increase compared to November 2022. In Bulgaria, combined traffic at the coastal airports of Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) slightly decreased by 2.9 percent year-on-year, totaling 83,347 passengers. Continuing its growth trend, Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera served approximately 1.5 million passengers in November 2023, reflecting a 3.9 percent year-on-year increase.

Across all airports actively managed by Fraport, passenger numbers saw a robust advancement of 7.5 percent year-on-year, reaching a total of approximately 9.9 million travelers in November 2023.
