One of the first countries to reopen to American tourists in 2020 was French Polynesia. And now it has closed its borders as new cases of coronavirus have surged around the world.

This island nation, according to Tahiti Tourisme, which brags of overwater bungalows and dazzling aqua water over 118 Islands, including Tahiti and Bora Bora, will temporarily postpone travel from all countries from Feb. 3rd . “Faced with the resurgence of COVID-19 cases around the world and in order to preserve French Polynesia which has for its part, shown significant improvement for several consecutive weeks, the authorities have decided to temporarily suspend travel to The Islands of Tahiti including for tourists from all origins until further notice,” the tourism board wrote in its notice.

Any tourists who are at present are going to this country and whose return is scheduled for this week, will be permitted to finish their vacation.

French Polynesia has reported over 18,000 confirmed cases in total, as per the World Health Organization. For three days, the country has gone without a new case and has witnessed case numbers to drop from their rise, somewhere in October and November 2020.

In July 2020, French Polynesia first reopened its borders to tourists, asking for proof of a negative test along with a travel insurance policy. As the tourism is now being stopped temporarily, the islands will still allow essential visits, like health, work, or family purposes. Everyone have to produce a proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test from within 72 hours of their departure and complete a self-test four days after arriving in the country.

Also, the islands introduced a nightly curfew through at least Feb. 15, mandated mask wearing, and closed bars and nightclubs, according to the government.
