Spain’s FITURNEXT 2027 Challenge has emerged as a major global tourism initiative after recording more than 350 submissions from five continents focused on protecting cultural identity, strengthening local communities and creating sustainable travel models. The sustainability observatory of Spain’s International Tourism Fair (FITUR) is analysing projects that position tourism as a force for preserving heritage, traditions and community values rather than contributing to cultural erosion or uncontrolled commercialisation.
The eighth edition of the FITURNEXT Observatory is dedicated to the theme “Tourism and the Preservation & Promotion of Cultural Identity”, addressing one of the most important challenges facing destinations worldwide: how to expand tourism while protecting the unique cultural elements that attract visitors.
Applications for the 2027 Challenge remain open until August 31, after which FITURNEXT will evaluate the global submissions and select nine finalists. Three winning initiatives will be recognised during FITUR 2027, taking place from January 20 to 24, 2027, at IFEMA Madrid, Spain.
The programme aims to identify real-world tourism solutions that allow destinations to maintain ownership of their cultural narratives while generating sustainable economic opportunities.

Tourism destinations across the world are increasingly facing the challenge of balancing visitor growth with cultural preservation. While tourism creates employment, investment and international recognition, rapid expansion can also place pressure on traditional lifestyles, historic areas and community values.
The FITURNEXT 2027 Challenge has been created to identify tourism initiatives that address these challenges through practical and scalable solutions. The programme is searching for projects where tourism does not simply consume culture but actively contributes to protecting and strengthening it.
The central objective of the challenge is to discover models where:
FITURNEXT is focusing on initiatives that demonstrate how destinations can use tourism as a restorative tool. These projects show how cultural identity can become a foundation for sustainable economic growth while maintaining the authenticity that makes destinations unique.
The scale of participation highlights the growing importance of cultural sustainability within the global tourism industry. More than 350 initiatives from five continents have already been submitted for consideration under the FITURNEXT 2027 Challenge.
The submitted projects represent a wide range of tourism approaches, including heritage protection programmes, community-based travel models and experience providers focused on authentic destination identity.

Following the closing of applications, FITURNEXT will assess each initiative through a specialised impact and replicability evaluation process. The objective is to recognise projects that can provide practical solutions for destinations worldwide.
Cultural identity has become one of the strongest assets for destinations competing in the global tourism market. Travellers are increasingly looking for meaningful experiences connected to local traditions, history, communities and ways of life. However, unmanaged tourism growth can create significant challenges. Popular destinations can experience cultural transformation where traditional businesses disappear, local communities become disconnected from tourism development and heritage becomes reduced to a commercial attraction.
FITURNEXT 2027 is addressing these concerns by highlighting initiatives that place preservation at the centre of tourism planning.
The challenge focuses on projects that prevent:
Instead, FITURNEXT is searching for models that create a stronger relationship between visitors and residents while ensuring tourism contributes positively to cultural continuity.
The FITURNEXT 2027 Challenge has divided participating initiatives into three key categories based on how they contribute to cultural identity preservation.
The heritage regeneration category focuses on projects that restore, protect and reactivate both tangible and intangible cultural resources.
This includes initiatives connected with:
The category recognises projects where tourism helps finance restoration and protection rather than accelerating the decline of heritage assets. Many cultural resources require continuous investment and community engagement to remain active. FITURNEXT is highlighting initiatives that transform heritage from static attractions into living elements of destination identity.
These projects demonstrate how tourism can support conservation while creating educational and economic opportunities for residents.
The second category focuses on tourism models where local communities directly participate in creating and managing visitor experiences. Community-led tourism has become increasingly important as destinations seek more inclusive approaches to tourism development. Instead of communities becoming passive attractions, residents become active decision-makers and beneficiaries.
FITURNEXT is analysing projects that support:
These initiatives aim to strengthen the relationship between tourism and communities by ensuring residents maintain influence over how their culture is presented to visitors. By supporting community participation, tourism can contribute to local economic development while protecting cultural authenticity.
The third category focuses on tourism businesses, including travel agencies, tour operators and experience providers, that develop products based on genuine destination identity. FITURNEXT is recognising initiatives that move beyond standard sightseeing models and create experiences connected with local culture, traditions and community knowledge.
Examples of identity-based tourism products include:
The category encourages tourism providers to create experiences that respect cultural values and avoid turning traditions into simplified commercial products. These initiatives demonstrate how businesses can support cultural preservation while offering travellers deeper and more meaningful connections.
The FITURNEXT Challenge aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing the connection between tourism, cultural protection and inclusive growth.
The initiative supports:UN Sustainable Development Goal Tourism Connection SDG 11.4 Protecting cultural and natural heritage SDG 8 Supporting sustainable economic growth and employment SDG 8.9 Encouraging sustainable local tourism economies SDG 10 Reducing inequalities through inclusive tourism
Through these connections, FITURNEXT highlights the role tourism can play in creating stronger communities and protecting cultural resources. The programme reflects a wider shift in global tourism strategies where sustainability is no longer limited to environmental protection but also includes cultural responsibility and social inclusion.
The FITURNEXT 2027 Challenge is not only designed to recognise award-winning initiatives. It aims to create a global reference point for destinations seeking practical solutions to cultural tourism challenges. After analysing the submissions, FITURNEXT will identify models with strong potential for replication across different regions. The selected initiatives will demonstrate how tourism destinations can welcome visitors while protecting the traditions, heritage and communities that define their identity.
With more than 2,000 sustainable tourism initiatives already analysed through previous editions, FITURNEXT continues to strengthen its role as a global platform for responsible tourism innovation. The 2027 Challenge places cultural identity at the centre of the future tourism conversation, showing how destinations can achieve growth without sacrificing authenticity. By supporting heritage protection, community ownership and meaningful visitor experiences, the programme is shaping a new direction for sustainable travel worldwide.
