After three years of extensive renovations, Munich Airport’s Terminal 2 has officially opened its newly modernized central security lanes, marking a significant upgrade in airport security and passenger convenience. The 15 advanced lanes, equipped with state-of-the-art CT scanners, were launched just in time for the Easter travel period by the Southern Bavarian Aviation Authority. These innovations streamline security procedures, allowing multiple passengers to have their hand luggage screened simultaneously while enhancing safety with automatic detection of explosives. The new system not only improves security but also reduces the need for follow-up checks, saving time for passengers and staff alike. The completed renovations are part of Munich Airport’s ongoing efforts to modernize its infrastructure and enhance the travel experience for all.
After three years of extensive renovations, Munich Airport’s Terminal 2 has unveiled its fully upgraded central security lanes. The 15 newly modernized lanes, launched just in time for the Easter travel rush, were initiated by the Southern Bavarian Aviation Authority, a division of the Government of Upper Bavaria. The introduction of advanced technology, including CT scanners, is designed to streamline processes for both passengers and staff while boosting overall security standards.

The new system primarily benefits passengers by offering more convenience. Up to four individuals can now submit their hand luggage for screening simultaneously, and there’s no need to remove electronic devices or liquids from bags for inspection. The CT scanners, which automatically detect explosives, ensure higher safety levels, while their 3D imaging capabilities help security personnel work more efficiently, reducing the need for follow-up checks and saving valuable time at the checkpoint.
During the inauguration, prominent figures such as Bavarian Minister of Transport Christian Bernreiter, Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers, and Lufthansa CEO Jens Ritter were present to personally experience the upgraded security lanes. They were also briefed on the technical aspects of the new system by experts from the Ministry of Transport, the Aviation Authority, and Munich Airport’s security provider, SGM.
Munich Airport’s Terminal 2 has unveiled its fully modernized security lanes, featuring advanced CT scanners that streamline passenger screening while enhancing safety. The upgrades, completed after three years of work, aim to improve efficiency and security just in time for the Easter travel period.
The project dates back to 2019, when the Southern Bavarian Aviation Authority, alongside SGM and the Terminal 2 Operating Company, a partnership between Munich Airport and Lufthansa, tested two pilot systems—marking the first such trial in Germany. Reconstruction of the central security checkpoint began in October 2022, and with the regular lanes now completed, two additional lanes with CT scanners are expected to be finished by the end of 2025. These new lanes will cater to families with young children and travelers with limited mobility. Meanwhile, upgrades to Terminal 1 are set to conclude before the summer holidays of 2026. With these innovations, Munich Airport solidifies its position as a leading hub in global air travel modernization.
