A major step toward digital tourism modernisation has been advanced as Thailand Cross-Border QR Payment, Pay Like a Local initiative, cashless tourism Thailand, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), and digital payment tourism expansion have been positioned at the centre of a nationwide financial innovation strategy. Seamless transaction systems have been strengthened across the tourism sector, enabling international visitors to use familiar mobile wallets for everyday payments throughout the kingdom.
Under the initiative, Thailand has been actively expanding its Cross-Border QR Payment system, allowing tourists from participating countries to conduct secure, contactless, and real-time transactions. The system has been designed to reduce dependence on cash while improving convenience for international travellers across attractions, retail outlets, restaurants, and tourism establishments.

The programme has been promoted under the Pay Like a Local concept, which has been structured to integrate merchant readiness with traveller awareness. Through this model, a more efficient digital payment ecosystem has been established, supporting both tourism growth and business digitisation.
A coordinated effort has been implemented under the leadership of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), operating under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The expansion of Cross-Border QR Payment systems has been advanced through collaboration between the Bank of Thailand and a consortium of eight participating financial institutions.

These institutions include Krungthai Bank, Bangkok Bank, Kasikornbank, Siam Commercial Bank, Bank of Ayudhya, ICBC Thai, Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, and CIMB Thai Bank. In addition, payment infrastructure has been supported by National ITMX alongside global payment partners such as Alipay, WeChat Pay, and UnionPay.
Through this extensive collaboration, interoperability between international payment systems and Thai merchant networks has been strengthened. As a result, a unified digital payment environment has been developed to support the increasing demand for cashless travel experiences across the country.
The Pay Like a Local concept, mobile wallet tourism payments, QR code transactions Thailand, and cashless travel experience have been structured to allow visitors to use familiar financial applications from their home countries. Payments have been enabled through supported mobile banking apps and e-wallets, which are used to scan QR codes at participating outlets across Thailand.
This system has been designed to simplify everyday transactions for tourists, reducing reliance on physical cash while enhancing security and efficiency. By enabling direct digital payments, smoother travel experiences have been facilitated across accommodation providers, food and beverage outlets, transport services, and retail environments.
The system has already been made available to users from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Viet Nam, South Korea, Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Hong Kong, with additional markets expected to be included in future expansion phases.
Changing consumer behaviour across East Asia has been identified as a key factor driving the expansion of digital payment systems. The increasing reliance on mobile payment technologies in daily life across these markets has been reflected in rising demand for QR-based transaction systems during international travel.
According to senior tourism leadership from the East Asia region, the growing adoption of mobile wallets has been recognised as a transformative force in shaping visitor expectations. The integration of Cross-Border QR Payment systems has been described as an important advancement in improving visitor satisfaction while simultaneously supporting local business growth.
The initiative has also been positioned as a strategic tool for strengthening Thailand’s global image as a modern, digitally connected tourism destination, aligned with evolving international travel behaviours.
To support large-scale adoption, a Merchant Activation Roadshow, QR payment merchant registration, and tourism business digital onboarding programme has been conducted at Asiatique The Riverfront Destination in Bangkok. The event has been held between Warehouses 8 and 9 and has been designed to engage tourism operators, retailers, and service providers.
During the activation programme, merchants have been provided with opportunities to learn about QR payment systems, assess operational readiness, and receive direct consultation from partner financial institutions. On-site registration for QR merchant services has also been facilitated to accelerate system adoption across the tourism value chain.
The activation event has also included partner exhibition booths, promotional activities, and incentive programmes such as lucky draws for registered merchants. In addition, an awareness walk has been organised by participating agencies and partners to encourage wider industry participation and system uptake.
Prior to the Bangkok activation, a pilot programme had been conducted in Udon Thani on 31 March 2026. This initiative had been introduced to prepare local operators for an expected increase in Chinese visitor arrivals and to test system readiness in regional tourism environments.
The pilot phase included a dedicated seminar on QR payment acceptance, which was attended by 52 tourism operators at Monthathip Hall Convention Centre. Alongside the seminar, a mobile outreach unit had been deployed to assist small businesses operating along Thong Yai Road and within the UD Town commercial area.
Through this phased rollout approach, system performance has been evaluated in both urban and regional settings, ensuring that infrastructure readiness has been strengthened prior to nationwide scaling.
The expansion of Cross-Border QR Payment systems has been aligned with broader national objectives to enhance Thailand’s competitiveness as a leading global tourism destination. By enabling frictionless financial transactions, visitor experience quality has been improved while operational efficiency for merchants has been increased.
The integration of international payment networks with domestic financial systems has supported stronger economic participation across the tourism sector. Small and medium-sized businesses have been particularly positioned to benefit from increased transaction volume and reduced cash handling constraints.
Through continued collaboration between financial institutions, tourism authorities, and technology partners, Thailand’s digital tourism infrastructure has been steadily strengthened to support future growth in international arrivals.
