17th annual Brussels Airport Aviation Awards soar to new heights

As per its yearly custom, Brussels Airport unveiled the Brussels Airport Aviation Awards during an evening ceremony held on Tuesday, February 20th.These awards celebrate the exceptional accomplishments of airlines and partners throughout 2023, spotlighting achievements in punctuality, operational excellence, network expansion, and dedication to safety and environmental responsibility. The event, graced by Brussels Airport’s partners, featured the presentation of ten awards, emphasizing the airport’s steadfast dedication to excellence.Since 2007, Brussels Airport has been honoring airlines and partners with the Aviation Awards for their exceptional contributions to the industry. This year, awards were distributed across ten distinct categories.

Performance & Punctuality Awards:
The Performance & Punctuality Awards recognize passenger and cargo airlines that demonstrate exceptional punctuality and operational efficiency. Punctuality is gauged by on-time arrivals or departures within a 15-minute window of the scheduled time. Cargo performance metrics include weekly flight frequency, destination count, total cargo volume transported, cargo load per flight, and year-over-year growth in cargo tonnage.

Short Haul Airline Punctuality Award: Finnair

Finnair clinched the Punctuality Award for short-haul airlines, boasting the best on-time performance in 2023. Operating three daily flights to Helsinki, Finnair previously secured this accolade in 2009. The airline outperformed other nominees including Air Europa, Croatia Airlines, KLM, and Transavia.

Long Haul Airline Punctuality Award: Hainan Airlines

Hainan Airlines secured the Punctuality Award for long-haul carriers this year. With a daily non-stop service to Beijing and thrice-weekly flights to Shenzhen, Hainan Airlines emerged as the top performer. Nominees in this category included Delta Air Lines, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, and Qatar Airways.

Cargo Airline Performance Award: Qatar Airways Cargo

Qatar Airways Cargo earned recognition for its significant contributions to Brucargo’s development in 2023. A previous recipient in 2019, 2020, and 2021, Qatar Airways Cargo’s extensive global network underscores its strong commitment to Brussels Airport. Other nominees comprised Air Belgium, Ethiopian Airlines Cargo, Sichuan Airlines, and Singapore Airlines Cargo.

Network Development Awards
The Network Development Awards celebrate airlines that have initiated new routes or achieved significant expansion in passenger numbers or cargo transportation volumes.

Cargo Airline Award: United Airlines

United Airlines clinched the Cargo Airline Award for 2023, playing a pivotal role in establishing a pivotal gateway for pharmaceutical products in the United States by actively advocating for Brussels Airport among pharmaceutical shippers, leveraging its three daily passenger flights. Other contenders for this award included Air Belgium, Qatar Airways Cargo, Sichuan Airlines, and Singapore Airlines Cargo.

Short Haul Airline Network Development Award: Vueling

Vueling emerged victorious in this category by virtue of its introduction of new routes to Bilbao and Seville, coupled with increased frequencies to Alicante, Malaga, Valencia, and Barcelona, resulting in a remarkable 27% growth for the airline. Competing nominees comprised Royal Jordanian, SunExpress, Transavia, and TUI fly.

Long Haul Airline Network Development Prize: Hainan Airlines

Hainan Airlines has been honored with the Long Haul Airline Network Development Prize for its introduction of flights to Shenzhen and the expansion of flight frequencies to Beijing, resulting in a daily service. The airline has designated Brussels as its main gateway to Europe and has experienced a remarkable sixfold growth. Other notable nominees in this category were Air Canada, Etihad Airways, Flynas, and Qatar Airways.
