Skyscanner’s latest release of its Horizons report for June-August 2024 offers insightful data on travel trends, booking timelines, and popular destinations across various regions including EMEA, AMER, and APAC. This comprehensive analysis leverages Skyscanner’s exclusive Travel Insight data to compare current travel behaviors with those of previous years.
Booking Timelines: A Shift Towards Advance Planning
Travelers are increasingly making their plans well in advance, demonstrating a return to more traditional travel planning habits in 2024. This change reflects a growing confidence among travelers to schedule their trips ahead of time.
EMEA: There’s a notable trend among EMEA travelers to book their trips much earlier, particularly for travel windows of 60-89 days and beyond 90 days.
AMER: The preference for the longest booking window (90+ days) has seen a significant rise, now representing a third of all bookings in this region.
APAC: While APAC shows a wider variety of booking windows, there’s a clear trend towards earlier bookings, including a 2% increase in the 90+ day booking window.
Destination Choices: Regional Preferences Emerge
The report also sheds light on the regions and countries that are drawing the most interest from travelers in different parts of the world.
EMEA: Over half (53%) of EMEA travelers are choosing to explore Europe, a 4% increase from the previous year. There’s also a rising interest in Southeast Asia, highlighting trends towards both proximity and affordability.
AMER: AMER travelers are looking for a variety of destinations, with increasing interest in South America and North Asia, in addition to the usual favorites in Europe, indicating a pursuit of new experiences and value in 2024.
APAC: Travelers from APAC are focusing more on intra-regional destinations, with a decrease in trips to Europe, preferring shorter and more economical vacations.
Trip Lengths: Slight Adjustments Across the Board
The average duration of trips to the most sought-after destinations has slightly decreased or remained stable compared to the previous year.
EMEA: Popular destinations include spots in Spain and Greece, as well as long-haul locations like Bangkok, New York City, and Sydney.
AMER: The search for global destinations is led by “Everywhere,” with Tokyo and several European capitals following closely. San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina and Orlando, Florida, are also high on the list.
APAC: European and US destinations remain popular, with Athens seeing the largest increase in trip duration. “Everywhere” ranks high, and Tokyo is unique with shorter trip durations.
Trending Destinations: New Hotspots and Flight Connections
The report highlights destinations experiencing significant growth in search volumes, indicating emerging hotspots and new flight connections.
EMEA: Places like Victoria, Canada; Marmagao, India; Panama City; Bol, Croatia; Pristina, Kosovo; and Lampedusa, Italy are seeing a surge in interest from EMEA travelers.
AMER: Trending locations for AMER travelers include San Carlos de Bariloche, Tokyo, Madrid, and Orlando, along with Medellin, Colombia; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Ushuaia, Argentina; Porto Seguro, Brazil; Santiago, Chile; and Tunis, Tunisia.
APAC: For APAC travelers, New Delhi, India, and Shanghai, China lead the growth, with Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Dubrovnik, Croatia; and Victoria, Canada also trending. Pangkalan Bun, Indonesia is noteworthy for its increase in average trip length.
