As the Songkran festivities conclude in most regions of Thailand, Chon Buri is distinguishing itself by prolonging the celebration of the Thai New Year with the Wan Lai Festival, which commenced this Tuesday and will continue until Sunday. This is good news for global travellers as they will be able to enjoy the Wan Lai Festival. This extension is celebrated both on the mainland and on nearby islands, contributing significantly to local tourism and cultural preservation.

In tambon Bang Phra, the locals from the Kho Khao Bang Phra community have engaged in the traditional craft of building a large-scale sculpture. This sculpture, representing the occult deity Baphomet, is constructed from bamboo, rice straw, and paper, reflecting the community’s commitment to maintaining their traditions. Historically, during a pandemic that occurred over a century ago, the deity Baphomet was worshipped by the people in this region seeking protection. This tradition continues to be a cornerstone of the Wan Lai Festival, symbolizing resilience and cultural continuity.

The Baphomet sculpture will be the centerpiece of a parade moving through the streets, culminating in an eye-opening ceremony scheduled for Friday. Post-ceremony, it will be released into the sea, an act rich with symbolic meanings of renewal and purification. Additionally, the festival is enriched with various activities including a water pouring ritual, cultural performances, chess competitions, and concerts, all of which offer both entertainment and a glimpse into the local traditions.

Simultaneously, Koh Si Chang is observing its Songkran celebrations this Thursday. During this event, participants have the opportunity to engage in traditional practices such as sprinkling water onto Buddha statues and constructing sand pagodas. Unique attractions such as carrying girls into the sea and water muay Thai are also featured, providing tourists with a participatory and immersive experience.

Meanwhile, in the Sri Racha district, the local park is being transformed into a major entertainment hub for the duration of the festival, starting tomorrow and continuing until Sunday. The festival will kick off with a parade featuring beautifully decorated floats followed by ceremonial worship dedicated to the Earth and heaven, blending spiritual reverence with festive celebration.

These extended festivities not only enhance the experience for tourists but also bolster the local economy. By attracting visitors with unique and engaging cultural events, Chon Buri is positioning itself as a key destination for those looking to experience an extended and enriched Songkran festival. This ongoing celebration not only preserves but also showcases the rich cultural heritage of the region, making it an essential stop for cultural enthusiasts and casual tourists alike.
