Syros in Greece offers a peaceful escape with uncrowded beaches, rich history, and authentic Greek culture, far from the hustle of Mykonos and Santorini.

This hidden gem of an island is just a brief ferry ride from Mykonos, yet it remains largely untouched by the throngs of tourists that flock to Santorini.

While Mykonos and Santorini continue to captivate visitors from all over the world, their overwhelming popularity has brought challenges, including the effects of overtourism.

However, Greece is still home to islands that offer an authentic and tranquil Greek experience. One such destination is the captivating Syros, located just 23 nautical miles from Mykonos, or a 30-minute ferry journey. With an area of only 32 square miles and a population of about 21,000 (as of 2021), Syros remains a well-kept secret.

As one of the smaller islands in the Cyclades, Syros stands out as the administrative and legal heart of the archipelago. Yet, despite this central role, it largely escapes the typical tourist radar.

Its pristine beaches remain uncrowded, and its towns hum with a relaxed energy year-round—quite the contrast to its more famous neighbors, which become swarmed with visitors in peak season.

Syros is a remarkable blend of Venetian Catholic influences and ancient Greek traditions, dating back to the Bronze Age.

The capital, Ermoupoli, is the island’s lively center, once the first commercial and industrial hub of Greece. A visit to Ermoupoli is incomplete without a tour of the Industrial Museum, which resides in three separate buildings and highlights the town’s historical economic growth. Key landmarks include the Orthodox churches of Metamorfosis Sotiros and Kimisis Theotokou.

Wander up to Ano Syros, a 13th-century Venetian quarter with narrow, winding alleys and whitewashed houses that preserve its medieval charm.

For those craving a slower pace, Kini is a quiet village to the west of the capital, known for its seaside fish tavernas. Located just under six miles from Ermoupoli, Kini also boasts a serene sandy beach, perfect for a peaceful getaway.

History lovers should not miss the Archaic Temple of Athena, just a short walk from the ferry port. Perched above the harbor, this 6th-century BC structure offers both fascinating history and breathtaking views.

Unlike the seasonal rush of Mykonos and Santorini, Syros remains a year-round destination, with ferries running consistently. The island also features an airport (JSY), with flights from Aegean Airlines, SKY Express, and Wizz Air connecting to cities like Athens, making it an accessible destination from the UK in just a few hours.
