The island’s new visitor economy framework outlines ambitious tourism plans aimed at enhancing the island’s appeal to tourists. It emphasizes the importance of enriching the visitor experience to promote extended stays and increased tourist expenditure.

This strategy includes a mix of long- and short-term goals such as extending the tourism season into the shoulder months, enhancing data collection to better gauge tourism’s economic impact, and fostering investment from both governmental and industry stakeholders.

Hannah Beacom, chairwoman of the Tourism Management Board, shared that over the past year, the board has been diligently analyzing the local tourism industry’s challenges and formulating practical solutions. She highlighted the ambition for Guernsey to carve out its niche as a premier short-break destination within the UK and Europe through a well-defined brand and selective development. Beacom expressed confidence that the proposed framework would fulfill visitor expectations for a high-quality experience, although she acknowledged it as a guide rather than an outright solution, calling for a collaborative effort from the industry and government to enhance the island’s tourism offerings.

In the immediate future, the focus will be on promoting sustainable tourism and collaborating with the Guernsey Sports Commission to attract sporting enthusiasts. The necessity for an appropriate tourism product, including adequate accommodation, attractions, and transportation links, is also underscored, alongside the importance of tourism to the local economy.

Long-term goals are centered around improving productivity, competitiveness, and environmental stewardship, with initiatives to extend the tourism season beyond its traditional April-September window, enhance the tourism product, and celebrate Guernsey’s unique heritage.

Simon Vermeulen, a member of the Economic Development board and a former hotelier, underscored the vital role of tourism to the island. He pointed to the island’s rich cultural and heritage assets as key attractions for visitors and stressed the need to leverage the tourism sector’s potential in the wake of global disruptions.

This new framework represents a concerted effort to rejuvenate the island’s tourism sector, showcasing its significance to the local economy and outlining a path forward to ensure its sustainability and growth.
