Last year, the tourism department of Hassan had added many tourist spots to the list of go-to destinations in district, taking their number to 33. The additions include temples, hill stations, particularly trekking destinations with viewpoints, waterfalls and parks.

According to sources in district tourist department, the newly added hill stations are in Sakleshpur: Maragunda, Pandavara Betta, MooruKannuGudda, JenukalGudda and Patla Betta.

Pandavara Betta is 40km from the taluk headquarters, and the foothills has Bhairaveshwara Temple. MooruKannu Betta is 30km from the taluk centre. JenukalGudda, the third tallest hill in the state, is 40km from the taluk. Patla Betta, 35km from the taluk, is famous for the sunrise viewpoint.

Mookanamane waterfalls in Sakleshpur, which has made it to list, is around 32km from the taluk centre and 8km from Bisle Ghat. The other attraction, Abbi falls (Magajahalli falls), is 18km from the taluk centre.

In Alur taluk, Parvathamma Betta and Magantimma Betta are famous for trekking. Parvathamma Betta houses a temple. Recently, some miscreants had vandalised the temple in search of treasure.

Konanur hanging bridge, 5km from Ramanathapur in Arkalgud taluk, has also been added to the list. The bridge has been built across river Cauvery to facilitate movement of people between Konanur to Kattepura villages.

Shettihalli church in Hassan taluk has made it to the list, and so are Yagachi backwaters in Belur taluk (known for water sports), and Hulikerepushkarni (of the Hoysala period) at Halebidu.

The destinations from Arasikere taluk include the Mahatma Gandhi memorial and Nagapuri fort.

Tourism department deputy director Sanjay said new tourist spots were not added this year as they did not receive related guidelines from the state government. “Identifying and shortlisting new spots depend on getting permission, accessibility and easiness to reach the spot. We will release funds for infrastructure. But maintenance should be done by the local administrations,” he said.
