In furtherance of the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority’s (HTA) dedication to destination management and visitor education, the Oʻahu Visitors Bureau (OVB) has announced the issuance of a Request for Proposal (RFP) today. This RFP invites proficient creative content development firms to present proposals for the rejuvenation of the revered Waikīkī Historic Trail.

The Waikīkī Historic Trail serves as a crucial cultural center, committed to the preservation and reverence of the profound history, culture, and geography of Waikīkī. Conceived in 1997 by the esteemed Dr. George Kanahele, co-founder of the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association (NaHHA), this trail comprises 21 distinguished bronze surfboard markers. These markers have long served as guides, leading residents and visitors alike through the vibrant tapestry of Waikīkī, offering a profound connection to this wahi pana, or sacred place.

Mufi Hannemann, Chair of the HTA Board, expressed that the trail represents a source of pride for locals and a valuable resource for visitors. It chronicles the events, accomplishments, and legacies of historic figures who have contributed to making Waikīkī an esteemed global destination.“The Waikīkī Historic Trail is instrumental to how we honor Waikīkī’s heritage, both for all those local families who have fond memories going back for generations and also for those visitors who want to explore and learn why Waikīkī is such a remarkable, unmatched experience worldwide,” said Chair Hannemann.

The main goal of the RFP is to revitalize, streamline, and enrich the content of the trail to better resonate with the preferences and information-seeking habits of contemporary online audiences. This ensures its continued relevance and accessibility for the foreseeable future. The project seeks to update the trail experience by integrating interactive elements that captivate while still preserving its historical and cultural authenticity.

HTA Interim President and CEO Daniel Nāhoʻopiʻi emphasized that the ultimate objective of the project is to enhance educational opportunities for both residents and visitors, nurturing a deeper understanding and appreciation of the rich and diverse history of Hawaiʻi’s most celebrated destination, Waikīkī.“The Waikīkī Historic Trail is undergoing an essential improvement in telling the story of Waikīkī, its places and people. It will be particularly engaging for individuals utilizing smartphones and tablets, as they can interact with the surfboard markers and access online information and images in a fun and exciting manner. The project also provides an opportunity to share safety and responsible travel information with the public, further emphasizing respectful behavior in this culturally significant area.”

The Waikīkī Historic Trail project is a vital element within The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA)’s Oʻahu Destination Management Action Plan (DMAP), particularly aligned with Action J. This initiative prioritizes collaborative experiences aimed at enriching the experiences of both residents and visitors. Furthermore, Sub-Action J.2 highlights the dedication to highlighting lesser-known sites, thus alleviating congestion in heavily visited areas while simultaneously enhancing visitor experiences through innovative signage, educational programs, and interactive content.

Moreover, in partnership with the Honolulu Mayor’s Office of Culture and Art (MOCA) and a committee comprising Native Hawaiian cultural advisors, the project ensures the utmost accuracy and authenticity in the development and presentation of its content.

“The revitalization of the Waikīkī Historic Trail presents an exciting opportunity to celebrate and share the vibrant heritage of Waikīkī with both residents and visitors,” said Noelani Schilling-Wheeler, Executive Director of Oʻahu Visitors Bureau. “We are eager to partner with creative content development firms to bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to this cherished cultural asset.”
