On Saturday, Munich Airport experienced the cancellation of approximately 760 flights due to intense snowfall, as reported by CNN citing a spokesperson from the airport. Munich’s public transport, including buses, trams, and certain train services, was also halted in response to the heavy snowfall, according to Munich’s public transport company.
Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s national railway company, reported the closure of Munich’s central train station for arrivals, with long-distance services also suspended. The impact on rail traffic is expected to be severe until Monday, as stated by Deutsche Bahn.
Numerous stranded travelers were reported at Munich’s main station, with one passenger expressing frustration, stating, “I’ve been sitting here in this place since one o’clock in the morning.” Another passenger emphasized the uncertainty about the possibility of leaving, as reported by CNN citing Suddeutsche Zeitung.
Police in Munich urged residents to avoid unnecessary car usage on Saturday, while individuals in certain parts of southern Bavaria were advised not to leave their homes at all, according to a Munich police spokesperson cited by CNN.
A scheduled football match between Bayern Munich and Union Berlin on Saturday was postponed due to safety risks and challenging traffic conditions, as announced in a statement by Bayern Munich.
CNN reported that Munich received a record-breaking 45 centimeters of snow on Saturday, the highest December snowfall since 1933. This surpassed the previous record of 44 centimeters on December 29, 1938. The heavy snowfall in Bavaria marks the most substantial in 17 years.
