Flights at Munich airport were back in operation on Sunday following a temporary suspension due to intense snowfall. However, ongoing issues with rail traffic in southern Germany were expected to endure. The airport issued a caution to passengers regarding potential air travel disturbances and recommended checking with airlines beforehand. The snowfall, exceeding 40 centimeters (16 inches), had impacted 760 flights on Saturday.
Munich’s primary train station remained shut on Saturday, with long-distance trains and public transportation services halted. Although rail services were slated to gradually resume on Sunday, substantial disruptions were foreseen until at least Monday, particularly on routes to Austria and Switzerland. This was due to weather-induced damage to infrastructure, as reported by the national rail operator, Deutsche Bahn.
In addition to the heavy snowfall, concerns arose about potential challenges for Christmas travelers and commuters during the bustling festive season due to transportation disruptions. Authorities and transport operators continued their efforts to clear snow from roads and railways, aiming to minimize further disruptions and ensure a more seamless travel experience for the public in the upcoming days.
