For travelers, these countries present an uphill battle of paperwork, fees, and endless waiting periods. Whether due to political reasons, security concerns, or strict immigration policies, these destinations are some of the hardest places to visit.

1. North Korea – The Ultimate Secrecy Fortress

North Korea remains one of the most impenetrable nations in the world. The government only grants visas to select individuals, mainly organized tour groups from China. Independent travel is virtually impossible. Journalists, foreign government officials, and individuals deemed suspicious are frequently denied entry. Travelers must surrender their passports upon arrival and are strictly monitored throughout their stay.

2. Turkmenistan – The Hermit Kingdom of Central Asia

Turkmenistan issues visas at an astonishingly low approval rate. The country requires a detailed itinerary, sponsorship from a local entity, and often demands an in-person interview at its embassy. Transit visas, although theoretically easier to obtain, still involve an unpredictable approval process. Many applicants wait months only to face rejection with no clear explanation.

3. Saudi Arabia – Once Inaccessible, Still Complicated

Saudi Arabia has eased its visa policies in recent years, launching an e-visa program for tourists. However, it remains challenging for certain nationalities to secure approval. Prior to its tourism overhaul, the country only granted visas for religious pilgrimages, business purposes, or family visits. Women under 25 still face additional restrictions and may require a male guardian for approval.

4. Iran – Bureaucratic and Politically Challenging

Iran’s visa process varies based on nationality. Bhutan strictly controls tourism by imposing a hefty daily fee of around $250 per person. This Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) covers accommodation, food, transportation, and a mandatory guide. Travelers must book through an approved tour operator, and visas are only issued upon full payment of the travel package. While not impossible, the high cost serves as a deterrent for budget travelers.

6. Eritrea – The African Fortress

Eritrea is one of Africa’s most isolated nations, and its visa approval process is notoriously slow and complex. Applicants often face prolonged waiting times with no clear communication. Even once granted a visa, movement within the country is highly restricted, requiring additional permits for travel outside the capital, Asmara.

7. Syria – Political Turmoil and Extreme Vetting

Due to ongoing conflict, Syria remains one of the hardest places to visit. The visa application process is extensive, requiring sponsorship from a local or business entity. Security checks are rigorous, and approvals are rare, especially for citizens from Western nations. Travelers with Israeli stamps in their passports are outright denied entry.

8. Russia – Bureaucracy at Its Peak

Russia’s visa process involves a mountain of paperwork, including an official invitation letter, proof of accommodation, and financial stability verification. The application requires fingerprinting, and processing times vary widely. The country’s strict visa regime makes spontaneous travel nearly impossible, and any error in documentation can result in denial.

9. China – Stringent Scrutiny and Limited Approvals

Despite welcoming millions of tourists annually, China imposes a strict visa application process. Applicants must provide extensive documentation, including past travel history, employer details, and proof of financial solvency. Those with previous visits to politically sensitive areas, such as Tibet, may face additional questioning or denial.

10. Nigeria – Endless Paperwork and High Fees

Nigeria’s visa process is notorious for its excessive documentation requirements and high fees. Applicants must submit multiple references, invitation letters, and proof of financial means. The process is often prolonged, and visa approvals can be unpredictable. Corruption in the system also makes acquiring a visa a frustrating experience for many travelers.
