Aimed at promoting tourism and giving a boost to its economy, the Himachal Pradesh government has approved the building of eight heliports in different districts of the state this year, and work on them will begin shortly, authorities said on Monday.

Land for the construction of heliports in six districts has been selected by the Deputy Commissioners and Pawan Hans will begin heliport consultancy work on March 1, according to an official spokesman. He stated that the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) were being delivered to the Centre in order to obtain funding.

The Centre will grant funds to the state for the development of the heliport in accordance with the criteria specified. Three of the state’s five heliports are being used commercially.

There is a proposal to create a heliport in each district, however because tribal regions have a great potential for tourism, more than one heliport will be developed in these places.

Heliports are proposed for Sissu, Jispa, and Rangrik in the tribal Lahaul-Spiti area, as well as Sarvo in the tribal Kinnaur district.

Heliports will be built in the first phase at Sasan in Hamirpur, Rakkar in Kangra, Sultanpur in Chamba, Pirdi in Kullu, Jispa, Sissu, and Rangrik in Lahaul-Spiti, and Sarvo in Kinnaur.

The old helipad at Chamba district headquarters in Sultanpur will be converted into a heliport. A location near Pirdi, Kullu district, had been chosen, but administrative consultations are currently taking place considering Kullu’s Aloo Maidan as well.

In the second phase, there is a plan to build heliports at Nahan and Dhar Kyari in Sirmour, Chanshal Larot in Shimla, Jankaur in Una, Galanala in Solan, and Pangi and Holi in Chamba.
