Historic Northern Hotel in Broken Hill opens after pandemic

A historic hotel in northern Broken Hill has reopened under new local ownership after being closed for over four years due to pandemic and renovation.

The hotel, first opened in 1890 as The Brewers Arms, was a popular watering hole for Afghan cameleers and other residents in the northern part of town.

It had been purchased by a family from Wollongong for approximately 10 years until it was temporarily closed in 2018 for renovations.

Anthony Hocking, the partner of Kelly Dwyer who was living in the hotel and running it on the owners’ behalf, was given the opportunity to purchase it during this time. The hotel’s reopening is a refreshing change for Broken Hill, where several hotels have been forced to close over the past few years, with only 75 remaining from a record of at least 1911. Ms Dwyer said it was exciting to bring back an iconic location with close ties to the city’s history, with the block of land directly behind the hotel previously used for camel and greyhound racing.
