The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has released the air traffic statistics for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) in January 2024. During this period, HKIA managed 4.1 million passengers and 28,755 flight movements, marking year-on-year increases of 100.0% and 77.3%, respectively.

The rise in passenger traffic reflects a consistent recovery trend, with notable growth across all passenger segments compared to January 2023, especially in traffic to and from Southeast Asia, Mainland China, and Taiwan.

Cargo throughput maintained its robust momentum, recording a year-on-year increase of 31.1% to 377,000 tonnes in January 2024. There was also a substantial uptick of 44.5% in exports. Traffic to and from key trading regions such as North America, Europe, and the Middle East witnessed significant increases.

Over the past twelve months, passenger volume reached 41 million, marking a substantial increase of 443.1% compared to the previous period. Flight movements and cargo throughput also experienced notable year-on-year surges of 101.9% and 7.9%, reaching 288,620 and 4.4 million tonnes, respectively.

HKIA’s air network continues to expand, with the recent addition of two new airlines: Ruili Airlines, connecting with Nanning in Mainland China, and Cambodia Angkor Air, connecting with Phnom Penh.

In 2023, HKIA received the prestigious title of “International Airport of the Year” at the Sky Choice Travel Awards organized by CAAC Inflight Magazine, the official inflight publication of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). These awards recognize excellence in the aviation, hotel, and travel industries, highlighting leaders and innovators who are driving post-pandemic economic recovery through industry development, innovation, quality service, and customer experience. Winners are selected through online voting, combined with assessments from an expert jury panel and the magazine’s editorial team.

Vivian Cheung, Chief Operating Officer, AAHK, said, “We are delighted that HKIA has been named ‘International Airport of the Year’ at the 2023 Sky Choice Travel Awards. As an international aviation hub, we are committed to offering and continuously enhancing the airport facilities and services through innovation and technology. We welcome passengers from around the world to come enjoy a brand-new airport experience at HKIA.”
