Hong Kong Gears Up for Five New Taxi Fleets with Smart Features and Electric Vehicles

A wave of transformation is set to hit Hong Kong’s taxi industry as five new fleets prepare to launch services, starting from late March 2025. The introduction of these fleets will add 3,500 taxis to the city’s streets, with 1,900 of them being fully electric.

A New Era for Hong Kong’s Taxi Services

The upcoming fleets—Joie, SynCab, Amigo, Big Boss, and Big Bee—will bring a mix of hybrid, electric, and wheelchair-accessible vehicles, offering more choices for passengers. Each operator will manage between 300 and 1,000 taxis, collectively accounting for nearly 20% of all cabs in Hong Kong.

Here’s what to expect from the five new fleets:

Unlike existing taxis, these new fleets will have distinct color schemes and branding for easy identification.

Modern Payment and Safety Enhancements

Passengers can look forward to a more convenient experience as the new taxis will support multiple e-payment methods, including Visa, Mastercard, and Octopus. Safety remains a priority, with all vehicles outfitted with GPS tracking, dashcams, and driver monitoring systems.

To further modernize the industry, the Hong Kong government is considering new regulations requiring all taxis to install in-vehicle recording systems and offer at least two electronic payment options.

Changes in Hong Kong’s Taxi Landscape

The city’s taxi sector has seen significant shifts in recent years, including the discontinuation of the HKTaxi app and the introduction of a stricter penalty system for drivers who fail to meet service standards. Additionally, taxi fares saw an upward revision in 2024, marking another change in the evolving transport landscape.

With the arrival of these new high-tech and eco-friendly fleets, Hong Kong’s taxi industry is stepping into a smarter, more sustainable future.
