One of the most notable achievements of the Indian tourism industry was its role in employment generation. In 2022-2023, the tourism sector created 76.17 million jobs, both direct and indirect, marking a significant increase from 69.56 million in 2013-2014. This growth highlights the sector’s role as a key driver of employment in India, supporting millions of livelihoods across urban and rural regions.
The tourism sector in India is well-known for its multiplier effect on job creation. From hospitality to transportation, and from cultural tourism to adventure tourism, every segment contributes to employment. The contribution of tourism to foreign exchange earnings (FEE) saw an impressive rise. In 2023, FEE reached USD 28.07 billion, a substantial increase compared to USD 19.69 billion in 2014, registering a growth of 42.53%. This growth demonstrates the sector’s resilience and its critical role in enhancing India’s foreign reserves.

The rise in foreign exchange earnings can be attributed to increased foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs), improved infrastructure, and India’s growing appeal as a global tourist destination. Programs like the Incredible India campaign and e-Visa initiatives have played a pivotal role in attracting international tourists, leading to this impressive financial outcome.

India experienced a steady increase in Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in 2023, with numbers reaching 95 lakh visitors, compared to 77 lakh in 2014. This represents a growth of 23.96% over the decade. India’s diverse cultural heritage, world-renowned landmarks, and vibrant festivals continue to attract visitors from across the globe.
The government’s focus on improving visa policies, connectivity, and destination promotion has significantly boosted international tourism. Destinations like the Taj Mahal, Rajasthan’s palaces, Kerala’s backwaters, and spiritual retreats in Varanasi remain top attractions for foreign visitors. Adventure tourism, eco-tourism, and wellness tourism have also gained traction among international travelers.

The domestic tourism sector saw unprecedented growth, recording 250 crore domestic tourist visits in 2023. This figure reflects a staggering 95.64% increase from 123 crore domestic visits in 2014. The surge in domestic tourism highlights Indian travelers’ growing interest in exploring their own country, supported by improved infrastructure, affordability, and awareness campaigns.
States like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Rajasthan emerged as leading domestic travel destinations. Cultural festivals, wildlife tourism, religious pilgrimages, and rural tourism have all contributed to the surge in domestic tourist footfall. Government initiatives such as ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ and state-level tourism promotion campaigns have been instrumental in achieving this growth.
India’s global ranking in the Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) saw a significant improvement, rising from 65th place in 2014 to 39th in 2024. This jump underscores India’s increasing competitiveness and attractiveness as a global tourism destination.
The TTDI evaluates countries based on factors such as infrastructure, natural resources, cultural resources, sustainability, and business environment. India’s investment in tourism infrastructure, eco-friendly initiatives, and cultural promotion has propelled its rise in global rankings.
Furthermore, India ranked 6th globally in terms of tourism’s contribution to national GDP in 2022. This ranking reflects the vital role of tourism in the country’s economic framework, contributing to job creation, income generation, and overall growth.
