In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, the West Manggarai Regency in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province has announced a comprehensive ban on plastic bottled water in Labuan Bajo, effective from April 12, 2025. This directive targets various establishments, including hotels, restaurants, tourist vessels, warungs (small stores), and government offices, aiming to reduce the substantial waste burden in this prominent tourist destination.​

The Regent of West Manggarai, Edistasius Endi, emphasized the importance of this initiative during the launch of the Clean Tourism Movement in Labuan Bajo. He called upon the Port Authority and Harbor Master’s Office (KSOP) to rigorously inspect tourist boats to ensure compliance, proposing that vessels found carrying plastic or glass bottled water should be prohibited from departing. This measure underscores the commitment to preserving the environment and ensuring the sustainability of tourism in the region.​

National Commitment to Clean Tourism

The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ni Luh Enik Ermawati, highlighted that the Clean Tourism Movement is a strategic effort to position Labuan Bajo as a globally competitive tourist destination. She noted that this program not only aims to enhance local community awareness but also seeks to establish Labuan Bajo as a model for cleanliness and environmental stewardship. The initiative is part of a broader national effort, with similar programs launched in 16 locations across various priority destinations, including Mandalika, Borobudur, Lake Toba, Likupang, Manado, Bali, Banyuwangi, and Jakarta.​

The Ministry of Tourism has committed to providing assistance, evaluation, and monitoring to ensure the effective implementation of integrated waste management systems in these destinations. The focus is on addressing waste generated from tourism activities, which significantly impact marine environments. In Labuan Bajo, the Clean Tourism Movement has already led to substantial improvements, with events like a massive beach clean-up involving over 2,000 participants, resulting in the collection of more than one ton of waste from areas such as the Marina Waterfront and Pede Beach.​
