The travel industry globally, ravaged by the corona virus pandemic, is banking on ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which would be held in Australia in October this year.
This big cricket tournament is expected to boost India’s outbound travel market and also bring more visitors to Australia. The tournament is expected to attract around 20,000 Indian visitors in 2022, said a top official of Tourism Australia.
“When Australia hosted 50-over World Cup in 2015 and when in 2018 and 2019 Indian team travelled to the country, it helped to raise awareness and attractiveness for Australia. Every time Indian cricket team has travelled to Australia, we have seen the halo effect which lasts beyond the actual event,” said Nishant Kashikar, Country Manager, India and Gulf, Tourism Australia.
The championship will be held from October 16 to November 16.
Kashikar said that the games will be held in Adelaide Oval, which can accommodate more than 55,000 people. The Brisbane Cricket ground (42,000), Geelong’s Kardinia Park (40,000), Hobart (20,000) and Perth (over 61,000) will function at 100 percent capacity.
The Sydney Cricket Ground, where the semi-finals will be held with a capacity of more than 48,000, and the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which can accommodate over one lakh will also operate at full capacity.
Australia reopened its borders to all visitors from February 21 this year after one of the most stringent and lengthy lockdowns in the world.
