Governor JB Pritzker, in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), elected officials, and industry leaders, gathered at Koval Distillery to announce the induction of 48 small businesses, known as ‘Makers,’ into the Illinois Made program. This marks the largest class since the program’s inception in 2016. Annually, the Illinois Office of Tourism meticulously selects local businesses that embody the authentic experiences and innovative products making Illinois an exceptional destination for both residents and visitors.

Governor JB Pritzker expressed, “The Illinois Made program spotlights our most outstanding hidden gems and unique small businesses, encouraging both Illinoisans and visitors to explore the exceptional experiences they offer. This year’s diverse class of Illinois Makers showcases individuals from all walks of life creating delightful food and sharing expert craftsmanship. Illinois is boldly declaring its openness for business, an ideal place for enterprises of all sizes to thrive.”

The 2023 Illinois Makers class stands as the largest since the program’s inception, elevating the total number of Makers to 276. This year’s selection spans a wide array of products, from locally sourced and fermented kombucha to meticulously crafted custom golf clubs.

Kristin Richards, DCEO Director, emphasized the significance of small businesses to Illinois’ economy, stating, “Small businesses are essential to Illinois’ economy, and Illinois Makers not only contribute economically but also enrich our diverse communities, inspiring travel across the state. This year, we proudly welcome the largest class of Illinois Made Makers to date, a testament to the diverse experiences and high-quality products offered by Illinois small businesses.”

State Representative Hoan Huynh commended KOVAL Distillery, the first distillery in Chicago since the end of Prohibition, stating, “Illinois’ innovators will continue to play an important role in our state’s economy, and I’m working every day to build the kind of state that gives them the tools they need to be successful.”

State Senator Sara Feigenholtz emphasized the impact of supporting local businesses, stating, “Every dollar spent locally on Illinois products helps businesses that are invested in our communities—allowing them to grow, hire more employees, and cultivate a stronger state and local economy.”

State Senator Mike Simmons celebrated the integral role small businesses play in communities, stating, “Small businesses and manufacturers are the heart and soul of our communities. I am so proud that the 7th District is home to KOVAL Distillery and countless other small businesses who, day in and day out, work hard to provide a community experience we all enjoy and rely on.”

The Illinois Made program encourages residents and visitors to explore the people, products, and unique experiences offered by small businesses across the state. The latest Illinois Made class showcases a diverse range of businesses, from craft breweries and U-pick farms to handmade artisan candles and macarons.
