China’s travel and tourism sector is growing super fast, making the country a big model for keeping tourism booming. The 2026 Economic Impact Research by the World Travel & Tourism Council, backed by Chase Travel, predicts China will lead globally in travel and tourism in the next ten years. China is crushing it compared to the rest of the Asia-Pacific area. This success comes from smart policies, long-term investments, and cool innovations. China isn’t just kicking goals now; they’re showing huge promise for steering global tourism and industry growth in the future too.
In 2025, China welcomed over 68 million international visitors, a 15.5% increase year-on-year, nearly three times the global growth rate of 5.4%. International visitor spending rose 10.5% to $135 billion, exceeding pre-pandemic levels. With 9 million additional arrivals compared to 2024, China recorded the largest increase worldwide. This surge contributes to the T&T sector’s growth to $1.8 trillion, a 9.9% increase, more than double the global growth rate of 4.1%. These achievements signal strong foundation for future tourism growth, positioning China to sustain long-term economic, employment, and investment expansion across its hospitality sector.
China’s proactive policies are a major enabler of future travel and tourism growth. Visa facilitation now covers over 50 countries, offering visa-free stays up to 30 days and transit extensions of 10 days, which contributed to a fivefold increase in arrivals from visa-exempt markets since 2020. Policy measures such as these not only increase inbound tourism but also enhance global competitiveness, attracting new travelers while fostering long-term confidence in China as a destination for leisure, business, and cultural tourism.
China is leading in technological adoption for seamless visitor experiences, including biometric entry systems and advanced digital payment platforms. These innovations improve traveler satisfaction, streamline logistics, and enable scalable tourism growth. By embracing digital solutions, China strengthens its capacity to host international visitors efficiently, enhances safety and convenience, and positions itself as a global hub for technology-enabled tourism, reinforcing long-term sector expansion and future market leadership.

Significant investment in air connectivity, high-speed rail, and secondary city access enhances the distribution of tourism flows, allowing more destinations to benefit from visitor spending. The development of new tourism zones, cultural attractions, and theme parks diversifies China’s offerings, while also stimulating regional economic development. These initiatives are central to sustaining future travel and tourism growth, ensuring that the sector continues to create jobs, attract investment, and enhance the country’s global tourism footprint.
The T&T sector supported 84.6 million jobs in 2025 and is projected to exceed 103 million by 2036, accounting for one in five new global tourism jobs over the next decade. Outbound travel spending is expected to rise by 22.5% to nearly $280 billion in 2026, surpassing the United States, while business travel is forecast at $192 billion, ranking second globally. These indicators emphasize China’s role as a future driver of both domestic and international tourism, creating long-term economic benefits and reinforcing the sector’s strategic importance to national growth.
WTTC projects China’s T&T sector to grow 5.3% in 2026, with an average annual growth of 6.5% over the next decade, reaching $3.5 trillion by 2036. With strategic policy, investment in infrastructure, and innovation in technology, China is poised to expand its tourism capacity, increase international arrivals, and attract high-value travelers. These factors collectively signal future growth opportunities for the global hospitality and travel industry, positioning China as a blueprint for sustainable and high-impact tourism development.
China’s growth in international arrivals, spending, and infrastructure shows the country’s potential to lead in global tourism. They’re doing this by mixing policy changes, tech advances, smart investments, and rich cultural offerings. This sets the stage for big growth in the hospitality world, creating jobs and boosting the economy. As China ramps up its travel and tourism sector, they’ll likely set new trends and expand across borders, keeping their strong role in the world of travel.
