In spite of monsoon awareness by the meteorological department, red alerts and torrential rain, tourists can be seen visiting the beaches in North Goa.

Tourism stakeholders said that there is a stable stream of domestic tourists irrespective of the drenched weather conditions. Tourists are only looking forward to drink and take pleasure in the water.

A lifeguard said that tourists visiting Goa are saying that they have come so far after spending a lot of money, and hence, they see no reason as to why they should not enjoy themselves in the water. The tourists are of the opinion that they know that the sea is unsafe, but still they go out in the heavy downpour.

The tourists tend to pay no attention to their warnings, said the lifeguard. They come out of the water when asked to do so, when the lifeguards go away, they again go back into the water.

Even though around 200 seasonal beach shacks and water sports activities are off limits, majority of other tourism-dependent businesses in the surrounding area of beaches are operating even though the monsoon is in full swing.

Vendors and hawkers in the beach area selling stuffs from braids and junk ornaments along with tattoos are also doing brisk trade with the domestic tourists. Mirroring the hotels and resorts, which present low-priced rates during the monsoons, sellers and touts on the beach are also giving away ‘off-season’ charges for massages and tattoos.
