Maharashtra is set to experience a transformative phase in its infrastructure development with the approval of road, highway, and urban mobility projects valued at a staggering Rs 1.5 lakh crore for 2026. The initiative is aimed at improving connectivity in key cities such as Nagpur and Pune, along with enhancing intercity transportation corridors. This monumental investment is expected to streamline travel, reduce congestion, and boost the state’s economic and industrial growth.

Pune–Sambhajinagar Expressway Gets the Go-Ahead

One of the standout projects among the approved plans is the Pune–Chattrapati Sambhajinagar expressway, a greenfield highway designed to improve transport between western and central Maharashtra. Estimated at Rs 16,318 crore, this high-priority project is poised to provide a faster, safer, and more efficient route for both commuters and freight traffic. It is a vital development that aims to connect critical urban centers in the region, enhancing travel time and overall accessibility.

Phase I of the Pune–Sambhajinagar Highway

The first phase of the Pune–Sambhajinagar highway, stretching from Pune through Ahilyanagar to Sambhajinagar, is planned at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore. This phase will involve the construction of several flyovers, interchanges, and supporting infrastructure to reduce traffic congestion and improve the flow of vehicles. The upgrades will significantly ease long-distance travel while ensuring safety and convenience for passengers.

New Beed Alignment to Improve Connectivity

To further boost connectivity, a new alignment from Shikarpur near Ahilyanagar, passing through Beed, is being developed to link with the Sambhajinagar greenfield highway. This additional route will help alleviate pressure on existing roads, ease congestion, and create a more robust transportation network across central Maharashtra. The new alignment will serve as an alternate route, improving the overall traffic distribution in the region.

Pune to Nagpur Travel Time Slashed to Six Hours

With the completion of the new highway projects, travel time between Pune and Sambhajinagar is expected to be reduced to approximately two hours. Additionally, travel time from Sambhajinagar to Nagpur will be cut down to just 2.5 hours. The total time for the Pune–Nagpur journey will be reduced to only six hours, offering commuters significant time savings. This will enhance trade, tourism, and business activities within Maharashtra, making the region more accessible and interconnected.

Elevated Road Corridors for Pune Metropolitan Region

To further enhance mobility within the Pune metropolitan area, several large-scale elevated road corridors have been approved. A key project in this initiative is the Talegaon–Chakan–Shikarpur corridor, which will include a three-level elevated structure to facilitate uninterrupted traffic flow. These corridors are designed to reduce urban congestion, alleviate traffic delays, and improve connectivity in the metropolitan region.

Nashik Phata–Khed Corridor to Boost Regional Connectivity

Another significant development is the Nashik Phata–Khed corridor, which will be carried out in two phases at an estimated cost of Rs 7,800 crore. The first phase, from Nashik Phata to Alandi Phata, is valued at Rs 4,403 crore and will involve constructing elevated structures and modern road facilities. This phase aims to improve travel times and enhance commuter safety, making it easier for people and goods to move efficiently across this vital region.

Phase II of Nashik Phata–Khed Corridor

The second phase of the Nashik Phata–Khed corridor, extending from Alandi Phata to Khed, will be implemented at a cost of Rs 3,398 crore. This phase will complete the corridor, ensuring uninterrupted road connectivity, easing traffic congestion, and improving the flow of freight and passenger traffic. The comprehensive development of this route will further strengthen the regional transport network.

Flyovers and Elevated Structures to Improve Urban Mobility

Both intercity and urban mobility projects will feature the construction of flyovers, elevated structures, and interchanges to streamline traffic flow. These improvements are designed to reduce travel time, enhance commuter safety, and support the urban mobility framework in Maharashtra. The inclusion of these advanced road infrastructures will also foster economic growth in the connected regions by improving accessibility and reducing logistical barriers.

Impact of Rs 1.5 Lakh Crore Investment on Maharashtra’s Economy

The Rs 1.5 lakh crore investment in infrastructure is expected to have a profound impact on Maharashtra’s economy. Enhanced road infrastructure will improve logistics, attract investment, foster tourism, and strengthen industrial connectivity. The development of modern highways, expressways, and urban mobility projects will position Maharashtra as a leader in sustainable transportation and urban development, significantly boosting the state’s competitiveness in the national and global markets.

By improving connectivity and reducing congestion, these infrastructure projects will facilitate smoother business operations, support the growth of industrial hubs, and enhance overall economic productivity. As the state strengthens its road networks, it will not only improve mobility but also create jobs and new business opportunities, benefiting the economy in the long term.
