Indians and Malaysians are showing the way for a tourist influx in Thailand after the country eased the entry rules, with total arrivals going up to 2 million since the beginning of the year. This provided a boost to the Southeast Asian nation’s slow-moving economy.

The total number of foreign tourist arrivals was 2.03 million between January 1 and June 26, said the deputy government spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul. Travelers from India, Singapore, Malaysia, the UK and the US grabbed the top spots in the list.

The tourism industry in Thailand, which was almost devastated during the pandemic, is hoping for average monthly tourist numbers to increase to about 1.5 million with the country dismissing a before travel registration and compulsory medical insurance beginning July 1.

Thailand has got rid of the majority of its pandemic-era restrictions on travel and businesses. Last week, it dismissed a mask directive and allowed pubs and bars to go back to normal working hours. These measures are for boosting an economy which relied on tourism to produce about 12% of gross domestic product previous to the pandemic.

Weak currency and the latest validation of cannabis possibly will help more tourists return to Thailand, said the Tourism and Sports Minister of Thailand Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn. The Thai ministry has placed a “conservative” forecast in front to draw 7.5 million foreign tourist arrivals this year, which is based on the supposition that Chinese tourists will be missing due to their Covid-Zero strategy and factoring in the Ukraine way, said Ratchakitprakarn.
