In recent years, the conversation around sustainable travel has shifted from a niche interest to a central concern for travelers worldwide. This change is especially noticeable among Indian travelers, who are increasingly recognizing the impact of their travel choices on the environment.

According to a comprehensive survey conducted by Agoda, a leading digital travel platform, an overwhelming 87% of Indian travelers are now considering sustainability as a critical factor in their travel decisions. This article delves into the findings of Agoda’s survey, the growing trend of sustainable travel in India and across Asia, and how initiatives like Agoda’s Eco Deals are making it easier for travelers to contribute positively to the destinations they visit.

Understanding the Shift Towards Sustainable Travel

Agoda’s survey, which polled over ten thousand respondents from ten different markets across Asia, revealed a significant inclination towards sustainability among travelers. Notably, 80% of respondents expressed a willingness to make more sustainable travel choices, indicating a strong collective awareness and responsibility towards preserving the environment. However, the survey also highlighted a discrepancy, with 22% of travelers rarely considering sustainability in their travel plans, underscoring the need for greater awareness and incentives to promote eco-friendly travel practices.

The Role of Financial Incentives

One of the key insights from Agoda’s Eco Deals Survey is the potential role of financial incentives in encouraging sustainable travel. Across all markets surveyed, 45% of respondents identified discounts and financial incentives as a primary motivator for making more sustainable choices. This sentiment was particularly strong in Singapore, Taiwan, and Indonesia, with 41% of Indian travelers also echoing the need for incentives or discounts to drive sustainable travel decisions.

Demand for Sustainable Travel Packages

Following financial incentives, the availability of sustainable travel packages emerged as the second most critical factor in promoting eco-conscious travel. Travelers from the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand showed the highest interest in packages that include guided conservation hikes or support local initiatives, highlighting a desire for travel experiences that are not only enjoyable but also beneficial to the environment and local communities.

Education and Clear Guidelines

The survey also pointed to a significant gap in awareness and knowledge about sustainable travel practices. Respondents ranked clear guidelines on sustainable travel practices, education on environmental impact, and relevant sustainability policies from local governments among the top factors that could encourage them to travel more sustainably. This finding underscores the importance of information and education in fostering sustainable travel habits.

Agoda’s Eco Deals Program: Bridging the Gap

In response to the growing demand for sustainable travel options, Agoda has launched its Eco Deals Program. The program offers travelers a selection of properties that adhere to sustainability criteria, and for every booking made through Eco Deals, Agoda donates one US dollar to local conservation projects supported by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Since its launch on World Wildlife Day, March 3, 2024, the initiative aims to contribute up to one million US dollars to conservation efforts, while also providing travelers with discounts of up to 15% on their bookings.

Prioritized Sustainable Practices by Travelers

When it comes to specific sustainable travel practices, supporting local communities and conservation projects ranked highest among Indian travelers, with 29% of respondents favoring this approach. Across Asia, recycling and waste reduction, participating in conservation-focused activities and tours, opting for accommodations with sustainability certifications, and choosing more sustainable transportation options were also identified as key sustainable travel practices.

The Way Forward

The findings from Agoda’s survey and the response to its Eco Deals Program highlight a significant shift towards sustainability in the travel industry. As more travelers become aware of the environmental impact of their choices and seek ways to mitigate it, the demand for sustainable travel options is expected to grow. This shift presents an opportunity for travel platforms, accommodation providers, and tour operators to innovate and offer more eco-friendly travel solutions.

The increasing interest in sustainable travel among Indian travelers and across Asia is a positive sign for the future of tourism. With the right incentives, information, and options available, travelers can make choices that not only enhance their travel experience but also contribute to the well-being of the planet. Agoda’s Eco Deals Program is a step in the right direction, offering a practical way for travelers to engage in eco-friendly practices while supporting conservation efforts. As the travel industry continues to evolve, it is clear that sustainability will remain a key focus, driving innovation and collaboration towards a more responsible and eco-conscious approach to exploring the world.
