India’s Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi is set to reopen its upgraded Terminal 2 on October 26, 2025. The renovation aims to enhance passenger experience by easing congestion, introducing cutting-edge technologies like autonomous aerobridges and self-baggage drop systems, and providing modern, world-class facilities. These upgrades are designed to meet the growing demands of air travel in India, ensuring smoother and more efficient operations while supporting the country’s rapidly expanding aviation sector.

The Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi is preparing to unveil the upgraded Terminal 2 (T2) on October 26, 2025, following an extensive five-month renovation. This relaunch is set to enhance passenger experience by easing congestion and introducing cutting-edge technologies, including autonomous aerobridges and self-baggage drop systems. With the expansion, 120 daily domestic flights from major airlines will relocate to T2, further strengthening Delhi’s position as a key player in India’s rapidly growing air travel sector.

The significant overhaul of T2, which was temporarily closed in April 2025, will create a more efficient, comfortable, and future-ready environment for travelers. The terminal, which has undergone a complete transformation, now offers a host of upgrades designed to provide a smoother journey, increased safety, and an overall superior travel experience.

Key Enhancements at the Upgraded T2

One of the standout features of the revamped Terminal 2 is the introduction of India’s first autonomous docking aerobridges. A total of six new Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBs) have been installed, each equipped with autonomous docking technology. This innovative system will streamline aircraft handling by reducing turnaround times, making the boarding process more efficient. Passengers will also benefit from the inclusion of ramps that ensure easy access for wheelchair users, as well as optimized cabin designs and enhanced safety cushions for added comfort.

In addition, the terminal has implemented a state-of-the-art self-baggage drop (SBD) system, allowing passengers to independently check in their luggage. This new facility enables travelers to scan boarding passes, tag their bags, and drop them off without the need for assistance. By automating this process, the airport aims to significantly reduce queues and minimize wait times, ensuring a quicker and more seamless experience for all passengers.

Improvements in Passenger Comfort and Facility Design

The revamped terminal boasts a range of modern design elements aimed at enhancing passenger comfort. The terminal’s ceilings have been restructured to create a more spacious and airy feel, while innovative skylights have been integrated into the design to maximize natural light. Advanced flooring solutions have been used to improve aesthetics and functionality, contributing to a bright and welcoming atmosphere for travelers.

The airport has also upgraded its Flight Information Display System (FIDS), which now features high-resolution screens to provide passengers with real-time flight updates. Clearer signage throughout the terminal has been implemented to make navigation more intuitive and user-friendly. Furthermore, the enhanced road connectivity surrounding the terminal will allow for smoother access to and from the airport, streamlining the overall passenger experience.

Focus on Safety, Sustainability, and Infrastructure

The renovation of T2 also addresses critical safety and sustainability concerns. New Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems have been installed to improve air quality, ensuring a healthier environment for travelers. Advanced fire safety measures have been implemented to ensure the security of passengers and staff, alongside a robust electrical infrastructure designed to maintain uninterrupted operations.

In alignment with India’s green mobility goals, the upgrade includes initiatives to expand and improve the airport’s public transport network. These efforts include the promotion of more sustainable and premium travel options, encouraging the use of eco-friendly transport for airport access. The integration of such measures positions the airport to meet both current and future demands while minimizing its environmental impact.

The airside and apron areas, which have been in service for over four decades, have also been completely refurbished. These improvements aim to facilitate better aircraft movement and to accommodate the growing volume of air traffic. The updated infrastructure ensures that the airport can handle a larger number of flights and passengers with greater efficiency.

Alleviating Congestion Across IGI Airport

Currently, Terminals 1 and 3 are operational at IGI Airport, and the reopening of T2 will help alleviate congestion, particularly during the high-traffic winter season. By redistributing flight operations and increasing capacity, the upgraded terminal will ease pressure on the existing terminals, ensuring smoother passenger flow and shorter waiting times. The addition of T2 will also help maintain the efficiency of the airport, ensuring that it continues to function as one of the busiest and fastest-growing airports in the world.

With four runways and a state-of-the-art infrastructure, IGI Airport remains one of the most important aviation hubs in India and Asia. The renovation of Terminal 2 reflects the airport’s commitment to staying at the forefront of global aviation developments, enhancing passenger satisfaction while meeting the demands of the country’s expanding air travel sector.

Setting a New Standard for Airport Design in India

The reopening of T2 is expected to set a new benchmark for airport design in India, particularly in terms of technology-driven, passenger-centric improvements. As one of the most significant upgrades to the airport in recent years, T2’s redesign will reinforce Delhi’s reputation as a leading aviation hub in Asia. With cutting-edge technology and modern facilities, the terminal will offer an enhanced travel experience that caters to the growing aspirations of India’s air travelers.

The revamped Terminal 2 at IGI Airport represents a significant step toward enhancing India’s aviation infrastructure. By incorporating innovative technologies and modern design elements, the new T2 will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable experience for passengers while addressing the increasing demand for air travel. As India’s aviation industry continues to expand, the upgraded terminal is poised to play a pivotal role in accommodating future growth and positioning Delhi as a key global aviation center.
