Southeast Asia Celebrates Major Milestone with Launch of First High-Speed Rail Line Surpassing 10 Million Passengers

Southeast Asia has reached a major milestone with the debut of its first-ever high-speed rail line, having already exceeded 10 million passengers as of Wednesday. This landmark accomplishment reflects the growing success of the partnership between China and Indonesia in advancing infrastructure development, according to China Railway International.

The high-speed rail project is an essential part of the Belt and Road Initiative and has been developed through a collaborative effort between Chinese and Indonesian stakeholders. It connects Jakarta, the bustling capital of Indonesia, with Bandung, a popular tourist destination. Trains on the new rail line are capable of reaching speeds up to 350 kilometers per hour, drastically reducing the travel time between the two cities from over three hours to just 46 minutes, offering a remarkable improvement in connectivity.

The day-to-day operations of the rail service are managed by the Sino-Indonesian Operation and Maintenance Consortium, which draws upon China’s extensive experience in areas like scheduling, safety management, and emergency preparedness. The consortium has implemented special measures to ensure that the train service operates safely and efficiently, even in challenging conditions such as earthquakes, heavy rainfall, and landslides. One of the project’s key priorities has been the localization of operations. In line with this goal, more than 600 Indonesian trainees have successfully completed specialized training programs. Of these, 263 have received official certifications from Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation.Out of the trained professionals, 34 are now fully certified to operate trains on their own, with ongoing support and mentorship from Chinese experts. Furthermore, 20 emergency responders and 20 station control staff have completed their training and are fully operational, marking an important step toward Indonesia’s long-term self-sufficiency in managing and operating the rail network.

The effective exchange of knowledge and skills has established a solid foundation for Indonesia to eventually assume full control over the management and operation of the high-speed rail line. This move toward localization not only enhances Indonesia’s capabilities in operating advanced infrastructure but also ensures the sustainability of the project long-term.
