Travel across the challenging ghat roads between Indore and Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh is set for a major transformation as the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways pushes forward with the four-laning of the Tejaji Nagar–Balwara section under the Indore–Ichhapur Economic Corridor. The highway project is expected to improve road safety, reduce travel time, strengthen tourism connectivity, and support regional trade across one of central India’s busiest transport routes.
For years, travelers moving through the winding hilly stretches between Indore and Khandwa have faced dangerous driving conditions, sharp bends, heavy congestion, and frequent delays. The route serves thousands of daily commuters, transport operators, pilgrims, and tourists, but narrow roads and difficult terrain often made travel stressful and unpredictable.

One of the biggest highlights of the project is the construction of three tunnels designed to bypass dangerous ghat sections that have historically witnessed accidents and traffic disruptions. The tunnels are being developed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, commonly used for complex mountain infrastructure projects.
The Bherughat Tunnel, stretching 575 meters, the Baigram Tunnel at 480 meters, and the Choral Ghat Tunnel at 550 meters are expected to significantly improve driving conditions through the region. These tunnels will help vehicles avoid steep curves and risky slopes, especially during monsoon seasons when visibility and road conditions often become difficult.

Officials believe the tunnel system will greatly reduce accident risks while allowing smoother traffic movement across the corridor.
The Tejaji Nagar–Balwara section covers approximately 33.4 kilometers and is currently around 88 percent complete. Built with an investment of over ₹924 crore, the project forms a major part of the larger Indore–Ichhapur Corridor initiative aimed at improving regional connectivity in Madhya Pradesh.
The upgraded four-lane highway is expected to replace older two-lane stretches that struggled to handle growing traffic volumes over recent years. Increasing vehicle movement, combined with difficult terrain, often resulted in long traffic jams and slow-moving transport operations.
Local residents say traffic congestion on the route sometimes stretched for several kilometers, disrupting daily life and delaying access to markets, healthcare facilities, and religious destinations.

The highway holds major importance for religious tourism in Madhya Pradesh. It connects travelers to important pilgrimage destinations such as Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, one of India’s most visited spiritual sites.
Authorities expect the upgraded corridor to improve travel convenience for tourists and pilgrims heading toward Omkareshwar, Burhanpur, Jalgaon, and surrounding destinations. The improved route is also expected to support smoother traffic management during Simhastha 2028, when millions of devotees are likely to travel between Omkareshwar and Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain.
By reducing congestion and improving road safety, the corridor is expected to create a more comfortable and reliable travel experience for visitors.
The Indore–Khandwa route is also an important economic link for central India. Indore serves as Madhya Pradesh’s commercial hub, while Khandwa functions as a key railway and transport center connecting multiple regions.
The corridor supports the movement of agricultural produce, industrial goods, and commercial traffic between western and southern parts of the state. Farmers transporting crops to local markets often faced delays because of traffic bottlenecks and unsafe road conditions through the ghat sections.
Spoilage of perishable goods and rising fuel costs became common concerns for transport operators and farming communities. The upgraded corridor is expected to improve delivery efficiency while reducing travel-related expenses.
One of the biggest expected advantages of the project is the reduction in travel time between Indore and Omkareshwar. Officials estimate that journeys currently taking two to three hours could eventually be completed in nearly one hour once the corridor becomes fully operational.
Transport operators and local drivers who regularly use the route say the project will remove much of the stress associated with driving through the dangerous hilly sections.
The wider highway, combined with improved traffic flow and modern infrastructure, is expected to create safer and more efficient travel conditions for passenger vehicles and commercial transport alike.
The highway project also includes several environmental and road safety features. Modern drainage systems are being installed to improve rainwater management during heavy monsoon periods. Crash barriers, advanced signage systems, and other safety infrastructure are also being added throughout the route.
Authorities have additionally introduced plantation and green belt development initiatives along sections of the highway to support environmentally sustainable infrastructure development.
As India continues expanding and modernizing its national highway network, projects like the Indore–Khandwa corridor highlight the growing focus on safer roads, improved tourism access, and stronger regional connectivity.
