Inner Mongolia Accelerates Green Energy Transition with Methanol Forum
Image generated with AiThe 2024 Green Methanol Energy Industry Development Forum and the Farizon New Energy Commercial Vehicle Methanol-Hydrogen Product Showcase recently took place in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, shining a spotlight on the region’s advancements in the new energy sector. These events not only celebrated Inner Mongolia’s progress but also charted a clear course towards a sustainable and green future.
Methanol: A Game-Changing Fuel for the Energy Transition
Methanol, known for its clean combustion, renewability, and high efficiency, is increasingly seen as a game-changer in addressing energy security challenges and achieving “carbon peaking and neutrality” goals. Amid a global energy transition and China’s ambitious carbon targets, methanol has emerged as a rising star. With 75% of new global renewable methanol production capacity expected to originate in China by 2026, the country leads the world in this transformative sector.

Inner Mongolia: A Resource-Rich Pioneer
As a region abundant in natural resources, Inner Mongolia holds both the advantage and responsibility to spearhead a modern energy economy. The forum brought together global organizations, government officials, experts, and leading enterprises to discuss green methanol’s development and strategies for high-quality growth in new energy. Li Shufu, Chairman of Geely Holding Group, highlighted the region’s commitment to restructuring its industries and bolstering ecological security, creating a robust foundation for green methanol as a productive force.
Farizon’s New Energy Commercial Vehicles: A Green Milestone
Farizon showcased an impressive lineup of methanol-hydrogen electric vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks, light trucks, mini trucks, and buses. These vehicles address various needs—trunk logistics, urban delivery, public transportation—and stand out for their economy, environmental benefits, and reliability, particularly in cold northern climates. Among them, the Homtruck, a methanol-hydrogen electric heavy-duty truck, achieved a remarkable milestone by completing a 1,522.9-kilometer extreme mileage challenge from Gansu to Xinjiang on a single tank of green methanol.

Advancing Green Methanol Production
Inner Mongolia has also made significant strides in green methanol production. The initial phase of the Alashan Green Methanol Project, designed for an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons, has officially commenced operations with a starting capacity of 100,000 tons. This project utilizes Geely’s advanced technology to synthesize methanol by coupling hydrogen from water electrolysis with industrially captured carbon dioxide, effectively recycling carbon resources. This initiative not only supports Inner Mongolia’s green transformation but also serves as a model for nationwide methanol economy development.
Policy Support Fuels Progress
Inner Mongolia’s progress is backed by strong policy measures. In 2024, the region secured 4.699 billion yuan in central financial subsidies for renewable energy, boosting wind, solar, and biomass power generation. Additionally, special funds have been allocated for industrial transformation, innovation in key sectors, and research in energy conservation and environmental protection.
