The WTTC-developed Hotel Sustainability Basics Program is crafted for hotels initiating their path towards more sustainable practices.

In January 2024, Intrepid will commence a trial phase with hotels in Nepal and Bhutan, with plans for subsequent program expansion.

Sara King, the General Manager of Purpose at Intrepid Travel, expressed that their suppliers desire to enhance their practices. However, as small to medium-sized businesses, they often lack the guidance or resources to initiate improvements.

Intrepid partner, Hotel Moonlight in Kathmandu, Nepal, highlighted the significance of the WTTC program in addressing the hotel industry’s reputation for high consumption of natural and man-made resources. The hotel aims to transition to energy-efficient LED lighting, implement water-saving solutions, and install solar panels.

Under the WTTC program, hotels undergo a comprehensive three-year evaluation process, measuring advancements across 12 criteria in the areas of people, planet, and efficiency.

To progress beyond the first year, hotels must meet at least eight criteria, achieving at least one benchmark in each of the three focus areas.

Upon completing the three-year improvement period, hotels can pursue Global Sustainability Tourism Council certification—a global standard for sustainability in tourism. Alternatively, they can embark on other improvement paths, such as the Sustainability Hospitality Alliance’s Pathway to Net Positive Hospitality.
