Iowa saw a record high for the state in airplane travel in 2023 with 4.6 million passengers.
Sioux Gateway Airport was a major contributor.
Sioux Gateway saw more than 30,000 passengers arrive and depart from the terminal.
That made Sioux Gateway third in the state behind Des Moines International Airport and Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids.
Assistant City Manager Mike Collett said the number of travellers through Sioux Gateway was not a surprise and that they expect more travellers in 2024.
“The enplanements were solid last year,” Collett said. “We still were about status quo with what we have been the last year coming out of COVID. But we expected to increase and it has increased over the last few months.”
Collett said the Denver and Chicago flight schedule will switch April 1, but he thinks it will only make travel grow.
“We see an increase coming these last few months, and I think it will just grow from there,” Collett said. “And I think the schedule change will actually enhance the number of people coming through here.”
