India’s rainy season is developing into a significant domestic travel period as holidaymakers increasingly choose misty hills, forest retreats, backwaters and less conventional destinations during the traditionally quieter monsoon months. New booking data show particularly strong demand for Wayanad, Shillong, Goa, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, alongside other destinations across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Northeast India.

The latest figures indicate that hotel bookings during the monsoon increased by 53.9% year on year, while bus reservations rose by 140%. Flight bookings expanded by 65%, and group reservations recorded growth of more than 25%. These figures suggest that the India monsoon travel boom extends beyond accommodation and is influencing multiple forms of domestic transport. However, the percentages represent transactions recorded by individual travel platforms rather than national tourism arrivals.

India Monsoon Travel Demand Expands Across Categories

The booking figures were published through Cleartrip’s PeekABoo travel trends tracker. They show that the rainy season is attracting travellers who previously might have concentrated their holidays during summer, winter or major festival periods.

Shorter stays remain an important part of this pattern. Travellers are increasingly combining weekends with limited annual leave, creating demand for two- and three-night breaks that can be reached by road, rail or a short domestic flight. Mid-range hotels also gained market share, indicating that the growth is not restricted to luxury resorts.

The 140% rise in bus bookings is particularly notable. Many leading monsoon destinations in India do not have their own commercial airports, making road transport essential for the final stage of the journey. Wayanad, for example, is generally approached by road from Kozhikode, Mysuru, Kannur or Bengaluru. Similar road connections are required for several hill and forest destinations.

The data support an established trend rather than an entirely new development. In 2025, the same tracker reported a 46% increase in monsoon travel bookings, with short breaks and younger travellers playing a prominent role. The 2026 growth therefore suggests that rainy-season travel is becoming more commercially established.

Wayanad Hotel Bookings Rise More Than 160%

Wayanad produced the strongest individual hotel-booking increase in the latest dataset, rising by more than 160% year on year. The Kerala district is associated with forest landscapes, plantations, wildlife areas, lakes and hill accommodation, making it naturally suited to experience-focused monsoon holidays.

The Wayanad hotel bookings figure must be interpreted carefully. It represents reservations made through one travel platform, not a 160% increase in total visitor arrivals, hotel occupancy or tourism revenue throughout the district. Changes in available accommodation, online inventory, promotions and the previous year’s comparison base can all influence platform growth.

Wayanad has also been rebuilding traveller confidence since the destructive landslides of July 2024. Kerala Tourism subsequently launched its official Revisit Wayanad campaign after widespread cancellations affected areas beyond the disaster zone.

Northeast India emerged as the strongest-performing region in the booking tracker. Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh recorded a combined 62% increase in flight bookings, while hotel reservations grew by more than 90%.

Shillong tourism also maintained strong momentum, with hotel bookings increasing by more than 65%. Guwahati recorded growth exceeding 60%, reinforcing its role as a principal transport gateway for Assam and the wider Northeast.

Flight bookings for Itanagar increased by more than 70%, while Jorhat and Imphal each posted growth above 50%. These increases indicate that travellers are becoming more willing to explore destinations beyond India’s established hill circuits.

Nagaland tourism benefits from landscapes, village-based experiences, trekking and cultural attractions, while Arunachal Pradesh travel is closely associated with mountains, monasteries, forests and remote road journeys. The booking data indicate that demand generated during the summer continued into the rainy season instead of falling sharply.

Nevertheless, large percentage increases do not disclose the actual number of passengers. A smaller destination can produce an impressive growth rate from a comparatively limited previous-year base. The data should consequently be treated as evidence of accelerating interest rather than a ranking based on total visitor volume.

Goa and Southern Hill Stations Record Strong Growth

Goa monsoon travel is also expanding, with hotel bookings increasing by more than 110%. The state has promoted rainy-season experiences as an alternative to its winter beach market, although rough seas and weather-related restrictions can limit swimming and water activities.

Pondicherry recorded growth of 104%, while Visakhapatnam rose by more than 85% and Udaipur exceeded 50%. These results demonstrate that monsoon demand is not confined to high-rainfall forests or hill stations. Coastal cities, heritage destinations and lake-based tourism markets are also benefiting.

In Tamil Nadu, Kodaikanal and Ooty each recorded hotel-booking increases of more than 70%. Cooler temperatures, cloud-covered landscapes and convenient access from major southern cities help make both destinations suitable for short seasonal breaks.

Gen Z Shapes New Monsoon Travel Trends

Younger travellers appear to be influencing both transport and destination choices. Gen Z represented 45% of train bookings recorded through the platform, while millennials accounted for 28%.

Among Gen Z travellers, Tajikistan produced booking growth above 245%. Lakshadweep exceeded 80%, while Muscat and the Philippines grew by more than 70%. Hubballi and Leh each rose by more than 65%, and Tashkent surpassed 54%.

These figures suggest that monsoon travellers are not choosing only domestic rain destinations. Some are using the season for international journeys, island holidays or trips to comparatively dry locations. Extremely high percentage growth, particularly for Tajikistan, may reflect a low starting base and should not be interpreted as the largest market by passenger volume.

What the Booking Boom Means for Tourism Businesses

The expansion of monsoon tourism can help hotels, homestays, transport operators and local guides generate income during months traditionally regarded as a lean period. It may also distribute demand away from overcrowded summer and winter peaks.

For travel businesses, the strongest opportunity lies in flexible short-break products, mid-range accommodation, reliable ground transport and weather-responsive itineraries. Travellers require clear cancellation policies because heavy rain can affect roads, flights, outdoor attractions and planned activities with little notice.

Destinations must also manage the environmental consequences of growth. Wayanad, Shillong, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh contain ecologically sensitive landscapes where rapid increases in vehicles, construction and waste can place pressure on local infrastructure.

Monsoon Travel Requires Weather-Aware Planning

Rising bookings do not guarantee safe travel conditions on every date. Hill roads, waterfalls, rivers and trekking routes can become dangerous during intense rainfall. Landslides, flash floods, waterlogging and reduced visibility may disrupt even well-planned journeys.

Travellers should monitor district-level forecasts through the India Meteorological Department, confirm road access with local authorities and check whether outdoor attractions remain open. Flexible accommodation and transport reservations are especially valuable in weather-sensitive destinations.
