Ireland is offering generous cash grants to individuals who decide to relocate to its offshore communities as part of the “Our Living Islands” policy. The government aims to bolster the population of Ireland’s islands and ensure the long-term sustainability of vibrant communities. To rescue and restore abandoned properties, the government will provide over €80,000 to new residents.
However, there are certain requirements to qualify for the cash grants. Prospective residents must purchase and own a property on one of the 30 islands not connected to the mainland by bridges and isolated due to tides. The property should have been built before 1993 and vacant for at least two years. The funds granted can be used for building work, including insulation, structural improvements, and redecoration.
If applicants fulfill the criteria, they can receive up to €84,000 to save a property from deterioration and transform it into their dream home. These grants are an extension of the existing “Croí Cónaithe” scheme on mainland Ireland but offer higher sums to account for the additional costs associated with less developed infrastructure on the islands.
From July 1, interested individuals can apply for these grants, but it’s important to check the specific eligibility policies of each island’s local authority. Some enticing options for a remote island life include Arranmore, known for its beautiful golden sands and rugged cliffs, off the coast of County Donegal, or Clare Island, a paradise for hikers, with a population of only 160, situated off the coast of County Mayo.
