Ireland West Airport shatters records by serving 159,000 global passengers in the first three months of 2024, marking a historic high.

The initial three months of 2024 have set a new record for Ireland West Airport, with a total of 159,000 travelers passing through between January and March. This marks an 18% rise compared to the same period in 2023 and a 6% increase from the previous record set in 2019, when 143,000 passengers used the airport. This summer, the airport is scheduled to connect to 21 international destinations and will be serviced by three leading European airlines: Aer Lingus, Lauda Europe, and Ryanair.

During this period, 146,000 passengers flew to and from the UK, marking a 20% increase from the first quarter of 2023. Notable increases were seen on flights to major cities such as London Heathrow, Edinburgh, and Liverpool. Both Aer Lingus and Ryanair experienced their highest first-quarter passenger volumes ever at this airport. Additionally, the airport saw 12,000 passengers on flights to and from destinations like Malaga, Lanzarote, and Tenerife, setting a new passenger record for these routes. The reintroduction of weekly flights to Lanzarote and Tenerife after a four-year hiatus was particularly well-received by local vacationers.

Concurrently, Ryanair is launching its most extensive summer schedule ever, featuring flights to nine popular European city and beach destinations. The summer 2024 schedule includes 32 weekly flights, offering 170,000 seats to places such as Alicante, Barcelona, Cologne, Faro, Lanzarote, Majorca, Malaga, Milan, and Tenerife—an increase of 3% over the previous summer.

Ryanair will also extend its reach this summer with services to eight UK airports, including Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands (Nottingham), Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool, London Luton, and London Stansted. Meanwhile, Aer Lingus will maintain daily flights to London Heathrow, linking passengers to over 80 international locations through partnerships with airlines like Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Iberia, JetBlue, and United Airlines.

Enhancing this year’s travel experience, Ireland West Airport has installed a cutting-edge cabin baggage screening technology that is now operational. This advanced system allows passengers to keep laptops and liquids in their bags, speeding up security processes and reducing contact points. With this new system, passengers can now carry larger quantities of liquids and keep electronic devices in their cabin bags, streamlining security checks and improving the overall airport experience.

Commenting on a strong first quarter, Joe Gilmore, Managing Director, Ireland West Airport commented “The first quarter of the year has proven to be a very encouraging one for the airport with record numbers choosing the airport for their short breaks and sun holidays. The increased numbers are testament to the expanded route network, increased convenience, and the stress-free nature of using the airport. In particular, the feedback on our new security screening system has been very positive and has further enhanced the passenger experience when using the airport, providing an even more seamless and quality travel experience this summer. We have a great selection of destinations available this summer and look forward to welcoming even more new customers, to experience for themselves the benefits of flying from the airport”
