Italy’s Ski Resorts continue to lead the way as the best value for both families and adult skiers in Europe, according to the latest Post Office Travel Money Ski Resort Report. The 19th annual report, in collaboration with Crystal Ski Holidays, has identified Italy’s ski resorts as the go-to destinations for travelers seeking affordable yet high-quality winter experiences. With ski resorts in Norway and Finland making their presence felt, this year’s report reflects the evolving landscape of European ski holidays, where affordability is matched by great quality and variety.

As the winter season kicks into gear, more than one-in-twelve British holidaymakers are preparing to head to the slopes, making the choice of ski resort a crucial one for families and adults alike. The report reveals Italy’s Passo Tonale and Bardonecchia as the top choices for best value, consistently outranking the competition, including emerging resorts in the Nordic region and the classic destination of Bulgaria.

Passo Tonale: The Unbeatable Choice for Families

Passo Tonale continues to be the best value ski resort for families, holding the top position for the second consecutive year. Despite a rise in prices of 14.4%, Passo Tonale remains the most affordable option, with a barometer cost of £1,797 for a week of skiing for a family of four. This price is half that of the most expensive resort, Saalbach, in Austria, where the total cost for a similar package has risen to £4,060.

One of the key factors driving Passo Tonale’s affordability is its offer of free lift passes for children aged up to eight years old when skiing with a paying adult. This initiative makes Passo Tonale over nine percent cheaper than its closest competitor, Bardonecchia in Italy, where prices have increased by 10.5% to £1,984.

Rising Prices in Ski Tuition and Other Resort Costs

Ski tuition remains one of the main contributors to the rising costs at ski resorts. In Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, prices have surged by 23.5%, causing the resort to drop from second place to fourth in the family rankings. The significant increase in tuition costs, which now stands at £666 for a week of lessons, has made the Slovenian resort less competitive.

While Passo Tonale and Bardonecchia remain the clear winners in terms of value, it’s important for families to be mindful of the tuition costs, as they can vary dramatically from one resort to another. Soldeu in Andorra is the only resort to show a price decrease for families, with a 3.7% drop in its barometer price, placing it in 11th place for value.

The Nordic Challenge: Norway and Finland On the Rise

While Italian resorts have dominated the family-friendly rankings, Nordic resorts are emerging as strong contenders in terms of value. Pyha, a new entrant in this year’s report, has been rated highly for its affordability. With a barometer cost of £2,404, Pyha in Finland offers excellent value for families, particularly in comparison to some more expensive French resorts. Geilo and Beitostølen in Norway also make their mark with competitive pricing for ski passes, equipment hire, and tuition, although the higher charges for meals and drinks have kept them from climbing higher in the rankings.

Adult Skiers: Bardonecchia Leads the Pack

For adult skiers, Bardonecchia tops the chart as the best value resort for the third consecutive year. With a total barometer cost of £601, Bardonecchia continues to be the most affordable option for skiers, despite an increase in prices of 10.5%. The resort outshines its competition, including Borovets in Bulgaria, which has seen prices rise by 11.1% to £668.

Geilo in Norway takes third place with a total cost of £704, offering great value for adults who prefer a quieter, more serene ski experience compared to the bustling French or Italian resorts.

Bulgaria’s Price Surge: A Closer Look at Borovets and Bansko

The Bulgarian resorts of Borovets and Bansko have seen the biggest price increases this year. While Borovets still ranks as a top contender for value, its rise in prices of 19% has made it more expensive than last year. Bansko, which held second place in previous rankings, has fallen to fourth with an increase of 23.3%.

Despite these price hikes, Bulgaria remains a key destination for value-conscious skiers, especially when compared to more expensive resorts in Switzerland and Austria.

The Impact of the Weakened Pound and Rising Costs

A significant factor driving price increases across the European ski resorts has been the weakening of the pound against European currencies. This has made holidays to many ski resorts more expensive for British tourists. The Post Office Travel Money Ski Resort Report highlights that ski passes have risen by an average of 10.7% across Europe, with some resorts seeing prices more than double over the past decade.
