In January 2024, Oakland International Airport (OAK) experienced a notable surge in international passenger traffic, witnessing a remarkable increase of 42.1 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. The total passenger count for January amounted to 839,381, marking a modest uptick of around 2.4 percent from January 2023.
“International passenger traffic was strong at OAK in January, reflecting the increased levels of service from our international carriers. The winter seasonal service to San Salvador provided by new carrier Avianca Airlines represented a significant contribution to that total, along with strong service frequencies from long term partner Volaris to several popular destinations in Mexico.” said Craig Simon, Interim Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “We thank travelers for choosing OAK this January, especially those who chose to Fly the East Bay Way on our growing number of international nonstop flights.”
Passenger and Cargo Statistics for January 2024:
- Total passengers at Oakland International Airport in January 2024 numbered 839,381, showing a 2.4 percent rise from January 2023, during which 819,955 passengers were accommodated.
- Among these, 402,504 passengers departed from OAK’s runways in January, with 63,481 passengers making connections at OAK.
- January 2024 saw 29,764 international passengers arriving at OAK, representing a substantial year-over-year increase of 42.1 percent from January 2023. Additionally, there was a month-to-month uptick of 10.3 percent from December 2023, when 26,988 international passengers arrived. This increase can be attributed to the commencement of Avianca Airlines’ seasonal service to San Salvador, El Salvador, and an expanded service to Mexico by Volaris Airlines towards the end of the winter holiday travel season.
- In 2023, OAK’s total passenger count reached 11,239,075, marking a modest increase of 0.8 percent compared to 2022, when 11,146,229 passengers were served.
- Furthermore, 85.2 million pounds (approximately 38.6 million kilograms) of air cargo were transported through OAK in January, indicating a slight decrease of 1.3 percent in comparison to the previous year.
