The Japan National Tourism Organization won Overall & Destination awards at Routes Asia 2024, highlighting its excellence in tourism marketing among global peers.

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) emerged as the top honoree at the Routes Asia 2024 Awards, securing the prestigious Overall Winner title and also achieving victory in the Destination category.

This accomplishment was part of a select group of five accolades distributed during the event, which is dedicated to acknowledging superior efforts in the marketing of airports and destinations. The ceremony, which took place at Routes Asia 2024 in Langkawi, Malaysia, also celebrated the achievements of Clark International Airport, Perth Airport, Melbourne Airport, and Cebu Pacific.

“Japan’s aviation success unfolds through strategic codeshared flights, inventive incentives, and collaborative campaigns,” JNTO Director Akira Watabe said following the award win. “With soaring reservations and passenger recovery, our innovation shapes a resilient future.”

JNTO’s strategy for market expansion includes a range of initiatives aimed at encouraging tourist visits to lesser-known regions. Through partnerships with airlines and travel agencies, as well as utilizing online platforms, the organization launches targeted campaigns focusing on areas such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Thailand, which are recognized for their interest in regional travel and propensity for repeated visits.

Clark International Airport in the Philippines was awarded in the Under 5 Million Passengers category. The airport saw a remarkable growth in 2023, with passenger numbers reaching close to 2 million, a 160% increase over the previous year. This period also welcomed the addition of five new airlines, including four international ones, and the introduction of 13 new routes.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to show how much Clark International Airport has grown and progressed to, and for fostering an environment that encourages innovation, creativity, and dedication. Receiving this award is not just a recognition of past achievements but a reminder of our responsibility to continue to strive and deliver the best airport service and experience that our passengers deserve.”

Perth Airport in Australia was the victor in the 5-20 Million Passengers category, maintaining its title from the previous year. The airport’s rebound post-pandemic was notable, with a record 15.3 million passengers in 2023, supported by the introduction of new routes from Batik Air Malaysia, Philippine Airlines, VietJet, and Vietnam Airlines.

Stephanie Juszkiewicz, SVP Aviation Business Development at Perth Airport, said: “Perth Airport is delighted to have again been recognised in 2024 by our airline partners. The successful return of seat capacity and the development of new routes has resulted in a record-breaking 15.3 million passengers in 2023. The team’s ongoing efforts to ensure safe and efficient operations whilst supporting our airline partners with route and market development opportunities are all helping to drive customer demand with pleasing results.”

Melbourne Airport, another Australian entry, took home the Over 20 Million Passengers category award. The airport, which saw 38 international airlines operate there, up from 36 in 2019, added six new carriers last year and reinstated services with 31 others to more than 26 destinations. Highlights included the launch of Qantas’ service to Dallas-Fort Worth and Turkish Airlines’ selection of Melbourne for its first Australian route.

Michael Cullen, Head of Airline Business Development at Melbourne Airport, said: “Melbourne Airport is proud of the strong partnerships we have built with our airlines and the shared success that delivers. We are thrilled to have this work recognised by this award and look forward to continuing our customer centric approach.”

Cebu Pacific was the winner in the Airline category. The Philippine low-cost carrier, which aims to double its fleet size by 2035, credits its success in launching new services to cooperative efforts. The renewal of its Clark hub in April 2023 played a significant role, facilitating the start and return of 15 domestic and international routes.

A panel of airline judges reviewed and scored the finalists in the Airport and Destination categories, while editorial judges evaluated the Airline category entries.
