Since the pandemic, Japan exhibited one of the strictest border controls of the world. By and large, the country shut down to all overseas arrivals, except for citizens and foreign residents with valid visa and re-entry permitsalong with few travelers with exceptional circumstances.
The near blanket closure distressed foreign students who are anxious to continue their studies in Japan. Now, even Japan’s largest business lobby, Keidanren, is urging the government to lift the country’s entry ban.
Unfortunately, at the moment, there is yet to be a decision regarding when Japan will reopen its borders to tourists.
Compared to some other countries whose only entry condition is proof of full vaccination, border control measures by some of Japan’s neighbors in the region might prove to be morepractical for Japan’s more cautionary approach.
