Southern Railway Travel Alert As London And Surrey Routes Face Major Sunday Closures Due To Engineering Works

Southern Railway has put out travel warnings for people in London and Surrey due to major engineering works on September 27th. Works will close sections of the lines between Balham and Sutton via Mitcham Junction and between Purley and Caterham and Tattenham Corner. As a result, some trains will be altered and/or replaced with buses.

Southern rail passengers will face widespread travel changes on Sunday, September 27, as essential engineering work closes several important sections of the network across south London and Surrey. The planned upgrades will affect services between Balham and Sutton through Mitcham Junction, as well as routes connecting Purley with Caterham and Tattenham Corner.

The closures will result in temporary changes to normal train operations, with some services suspended, others diverted and replacement buses introduced on affected routes. Passengers travelling in the area should plan ahead, check journey updates and allow additional time for alternative connections.

Mitcham Junction Route Closure Changes South London Travel Plans

A major section of the railway between Tulse Hill and Sutton will close during the engineering works, affecting services that normally operate through Mitcham Junction.

Southern trains will not run between Balham and Sutton via Mitcham Junction, leaving passengers at several stations without their usual direct rail connections.

To help maintain travel links, replacement bus services will operate between Tulse Hill and Sutton. The buses will serve key stops including Streatham Hill, Streatham, Streatham Common, Mitcham Junction, Hackbridge and Carshalton.

Passengers using these stations should prepare for longer journeys as replacement buses may take additional time compared with normal train services.

Southern Trains Introduce Diversions From London Victoria Routes

Passengers travelling on Southern services from London Victoria will experience temporary timetable changes due to the engineering works.

Trains operating between London Victoria, Epsom and Dorking will follow a revised route and will run without stopping between Balham and Sutton.

Another group of services normally operating between London Bridge and East Croydon through Peckham Rye will also be diverted. After Tulse Hill, trains will take an alternative route through Crystal Palace and Norwood Junction.

The revised arrangements will allow services to continue operating while work takes place on the closed sections of the railway network.

Surrey Rail Connections Hit By Purley Line Closures

Further disruption will affect passengers travelling between Purley, Caterham and Tattenham Corner, where all railway lines will be closed for engineering activity.

No trains will operate between Purley and Caterham or between Purley and Tattenham Corner during the closure period.

Alternative travel arrangements will be available through replacement buses running between Purley and Tattenham Corner.

Passengers travelling towards Caterham will also be able to use selected London Bus services, with paper rail tickets accepted without additional charges on routes 407, 434 and 439 between Purley and Caterham.

Reigate And Redhill Services Operate Under Reduced Timetable

Rail connections between Reigate and London Victoria will also be affected by the planned works.

Instead of running the full route, services will operate only between Reigate and Redhill. Passengers continuing their journeys towards London can use alternative Southern or Thameslink services without paying extra fares.

Train frequency between London Bridge and Purley will also be reduced, meaning passengers may need to wait longer or adjust their travel plans.

Travellers Urged To Check Routes Before Starting Journeys

The engineering programme will create temporary disruption across several Southern routes, affecting commuters, weekend travellers and passengers connecting through south London stations.

Replacement transport and revised train services will help maintain travel options, but journeys may take longer than usual due to route changes and additional transfers.

Passengers are advised to check their travel information before leaving, arrive earlier where possible and consider alternative routes if their journey passes through the affected areas.
