Today marks the commencement of Jetstar’s first direct flight from Sydney to Busselton, a significant development anticipated to stimulate the tourism sector of Western Australia’s South West. This initiative follows the prior establishment of a direct connection from Melbourne to Busselton in 2022, enhancing the accessibility of the region to a broader audience. With the Sydney route operational, an additional 28,000 seats will be made available annually, fostering further investment and employment opportunities in the South West.
The service, scheduled to operate three times a week, utilizes the Jetstar Airbus A320 aircraft, offering a more efficient travel alternative for individuals journeying from Sydney. This five-hour direct flight significantly trims down travel time by two hours compared to the previous indirect route through Melbourne. Such convenience is expected to draw more visitors from the east coast, providing them direct access to the region’s renowned attractions, including its exquisite culinary scene, premium wine locales, surfing spots, and natural beauty.
The South West, particularly Busselton and the Margaret River area, is celebrated for its contributions to eco-tourism and luxury experiences. The region boasts an array of new hospitality venues, including five-star dining establishments and accommodations such as the Busselton Pavilion, which opened its doors in January 2024, and the Hilton Garden Inn, introduced in December 2023. As of September 2023, the South West welcomed 3.4 million overnight guests, with Busselton and the Shire of Augusta Margaret River emerging as top destinations.
This new flight path complements Airnorth’s recent launch of direct flights between Alice Springs and Perth, providing nearly 12,000 additional seats annually into Western Australia. Operated by the Darwin-based airline, this service is scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, using their E170 aircraft. These efforts are part of the Western Australian Government’s $75 million Aviation Recovery Fund aimed at revitalizing the state’s air travel connections post-pandemic and boosting its visitor economy. Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti emphasized the transformative impact of these flights on the South West’s tourism sector, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing air travel to and within Western Australia.
