The Jammu and Kashmir government is doing everything to take winter tourism to other places beyond Gulmarg in North Kashmir. The government is concentrating more on promoting tourism in the snow-bound areas that remain out of bounds due to blocked roads.

A plan has been made for bringing in reachable helicopter services to the snow-bound areas, which can turn into winter tourism attractions.

Places like Gurez and Karnah in Bandipora and Kupwara districts, respectively which are near the Line of Control (LoC) have been attracting tourists from all over. From this year, the J&K government has decided to start special helicopter facilities to these areas for tourists.

It is expected that Sonamarg, Karnah and Gurez will remain open for tourists during winter for the first time in the past 70 years. Also, the government is considering including adventure sports and other activities in these areas for luring visitors, and new ski slopes will also be established in snow-capped areas.

Gulmarg has always attracted tourists during winter, and Doodhpathri in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district is the newest addition to this list, with both these spots accessible by road.

Even though for several years, tourists avoided visiting Kashmir even during the summer time due to diverse reasons, things are changing now. Tourists can now visit the valley even during the winter, and the government is making everything possible to ease the travel experience of visitors.
