Joplin City Council has recently given the green light to two significant initiatives aimed at enhancing the city’s tourism sector, particularly the revitalization of the iconic Route 66. These developments are poised to inject a substantial boost into the local tourism industry.

Joplin is located in southwestern Missouri, United States. The city’s strategic initiatives are likely to have a significant positive impact on local tourism. By enhancing the visibility and appeal of Route 66, as well as offering unique cultural experiences such as the 3D street painting festival, Joplin is set to attract a broader audience. These efforts not only aim to revive interest in historic Route 66 but also to cement Joplin’s reputation as a vibrant and attractive destination for domestic and international tourists alike.

The initial agreement focuses on improving the tracking of tourism metrics within Joplin. This strategic move will facilitate the collection of crucial data, offering insights into the current state of tourism and identifying potential areas for improvement. By analyzing visitor patterns and preferences, the city can fine-tune its tourism offerings to better cater to the needs and interests of travelers.

In addition to data tracking, Joplin is set to host its inaugural 3D street painting festival, featuring works by internationally renowned artists. This festival is expected to attract a global audience, significantly raising Joplin’s profile on the international stage.

The involvement of international artists is particularly noteworthy, as their participation is anticipated to generate buzz about Route 66 in their home countries. Patrick Tuttle, the Director of the Joplin Convention & Visitors Bureau, expressed optimism about the festival’s potential to draw international visitors eager to witness these artists in action in Joplin, thereby further boosting the city’s tourism appeal.

Scheduled for June of this year, the 3D street painting festival is just the beginning of a series of planned events aimed at promoting Joplin and Route 66 as premier tourist destinations. Looking ahead to 2026, the city is strategically positioning itself to benefit from the influx of tourists expected for the “FIFA World Cup Series” in Kansas City, potentially positioning Joplin as a key stop for visitors.
