Jordan Sees Strong Tourism Growth with More than Seventy-Five Thousand Visits in Early 2026, Fueled by the Petra and Enhanced Tourism Initiatives

Published on January 17, 2026

The tourism industry in Jordan has kicked-started 2026 positively, registering a cumulative number of 76,054 visits between January 1 and 14, 2026. Historically, Petra has consistently been identified by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities as one of the leading tourist attractions that welcomed 15,244 tourists, solidifying its position in the tourism sector, which has made it a globally recognized icon.

Foreign tourists comprise 75% of the total number of visits, making Jordan a favored destination for tourists all around the world, including the European and Middle East regions, while local and Arab tourists make up 20% and 5%, respectively. This number indicates increased confidence in Jordan as a destination for both foreign and local tourists.

Petra Leads the Way, Driving Economic Impact

As Jordan’s crown jewel, Petra continues to play a pivotal role in the country’s tourism economy. The 15,244 visits to Petra during the first two weeks of January 2026 reflect the island’s global appeal. With its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Petra’s timeless appeal continues to captivate adventure seekers, history enthusiasts, and cultural travelers.

The influx of visitors to Petra is also an essential economic driver for Jordan’s hospitality sector, supporting local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and tourism operators. Petra’s continued prominence in Jordan’s tourism portfolio is a testament to the country’s ability to leverage its cultural assets for sustainable tourism growth.

The Growth of Cultural and Heritage Tourism

Alongside Petra, other key attractions such as the Jordan Museum, which recorded 11,812 visitors, and the ancient Roman city of Jerash with 9,825 visitors, underscore the strong appeal of Jordan’s cultural tourism. These figures highlight the broadening appeal of Jordan’s heritage tourism, attracting travelers interested in historical exploration, cultural immersion, and artifacts.

With its rich history, Jordan’s tourism sector is evolving beyond its iconic sites like Petra to include regional cultural experiences and museum tours that draw an increasing number of international and regional tourists. The continued investment in tourism infrastructure and destination marketing ensures that these attractions remain a key part of the country’s tourism growth strategy.

Economic Boost and Long-Term Growth through Initiatives

Jordan’s tourism sector has experienced a notable rise in tourism revenues in recent years, with 2025 marking a successful year where visitor numbers reached 7.04 million, and revenues grew by 7.6% to JD 5.523 billion. These positive figures demonstrate that the country’s tourism growth is contributing meaningfully to the national economy, supporting everything from local businesses to government investments in tourism infrastructure.

Initiatives like the “Urdunna Jannah” Tourism Program, which saw 161,000 participants in 2025, have also played a significant role in driving domestic tourism and local engagement. By enhancing visitor experiences and making the country’s heritage more accessible, these programs foster a deeper connection between locals and tourists, creating a sustainable tourism ecosystem that benefits the entire country.

Expansion of Tourism Infrastructure to Support Growth

As the country seeks to build on this momentum, the demand for tourism services is being met with the classification of 276 new tourism facilities and the licensing of 48 new tour guides in 2025. These improvements are critical to managing tourism growth efficiently, as they increase the capacity of the sector to accommodate rising visitor numbers while maintaining high service standards and a personalized guest experience.

The expansion of accommodation options, tourism facilities, and the local tourism workforce ensures that Jordan remains competitive within the global tourism market, helping to maintain visitor satisfaction while fostering local employment opportunities.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity to Drive Tourism Growth

As Jordan’s tourism infrastructure continues to develop, the country is focused on improving regional connectivity. The addition of new travel routes, including those that connect Jordan to key destinations in the Middle East and Europe, has a direct effect on tourism arrivals. Increased air connectivity and visa facilitation help lower the barriers to entry for international tourists, boosting the ease of travel to Jordan from abroad.

As the global tourism landscape evolves, Jordan’s commitment to improving both physical infrastructure and service offerings will play a vital role in ensuring that the country remains an appealing and competitive destination for international and regional travelers.

Future Projections: Continuing Tourism Growth for Jordan

In the future, Jordan’s tourism industry will further grow by receiving more visitors who come to explore culture, enjoy nature-based tourism, and seek wellness. It is expected that the government’s focus on sustainable tourism will play a critical role in achieving a balance between visitor demand and environmental stewardship, so Jordan’s natural and cultural assets could be passed on intact to future generations.

With continued success such as “Urdunna Jannah”, the addition of new tourism products, and broadened tourism in the region by virtue of infrastructure improvements, Jordan is poised to take a growing share of the world’s tourism market. As the country incorporates sustainability and community-based tourism into its model for growth, benefits accruing from tourism growth will continue to foster economic resiliency, vibrant local culture, and environmental protection. This ensures that Jordan remains at the top of any list for travelers desiring authentic, enriching experiences in the heart of the Middle East.
