The “Jordan: The Dawn of Christianity” exhibition is part of an ongoing international effort to foster understanding and spiritual connection among people of various faiths. This exhibition follows the success of earlier editions held at the Vatican earlier this year. Its aim is to emphasize Jordan’s position as one of the most important Christian pilgrimage destinations globally. Through the display of significant religious sites, the exhibition invites attendees to reflect on their faith, spirituality, and the shared history of Christianity across borders.

Sacred Sites: Pilgrimage to Jordan’s Holy Lands

The exhibition focuses on five of Jordan’s most significant Christian pilgrimage sites, each of which has been officially recognized by the Vatican. Among them, the Baptism Site (Bethany beyond the Jordan) holds the most prominent place. This site is regarded as one of the holiest Christian locations in the world, believed to be where Jesus Christ was baptized by John the Baptist. The Baptism Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, continues to draw thousands of Christian pilgrims every year.

Another key site on display is Mount Nebo, where it is believed that Moses viewed the Promised Land before his death. Visitors are invited to experience the powerful history of this site, which has become a symbol of faith and hope. Additionally, the exhibition highlights Our Lady of the Mountain Church in Anjara, Tel Mar Elias, and Machaerus Fortress. These sites, scattered across Jordan, are central to the Christian faith and serve as meaningful destinations for reflection and spiritual exploration.

The exhibition’s presentation of these sites offers a unique opportunity to connect with Jordan’s deep Christian roots, showcasing the country’s religious history that spans centuries. The exhibit stands as a testament to Jordan’s commitment to preserving its sacred heritage while also fostering greater understanding and respect among different faiths.

Jordan: A Bridge for Interfaith Understanding

Beyond its historical significance, the exhibition is also a celebration of Jordan’s longstanding commitment to interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence. The Kingdom of Jordan has been recognized globally for its efforts to promote religious tolerance and its role as a safe haven for various religious communities in the Middle East. This is particularly evident in its hosting of Christian and Muslim pilgrims alike.

In 2019, His Majesty King Abdullah of Jordan received the prestigious Lamp of Peace award in Assisi for his ongoing dedication to promoting human rights, peace, and religious tolerance. His leadership has been crucial in fostering an atmosphere of coexistence, not just in Jordan, but in the wider Middle East. His Majesty’s recognition highlights Jordan’s enduring efforts to serve as a peaceful and welcoming sanctuary for people of all faiths.

The Importance of Religious Tourism in Jordan

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in Jordan has long recognized the importance of religious tourism as a key contributor to the country’s economy. With its rich Christian heritage, Jordan has positioned itself as a leading destination for Christian pilgrims worldwide. Sites such as the Baptism Site and Mount Nebo continue to attract visitors year-round, cementing Jordan’s reputation as a sacred land of great spiritual significance.

The exhibition in Assisi is a natural extension of Jordan’s ongoing promotion of religious tourism. It underscores the Kingdom’s growing importance as a center for Christian pilgrimage, while also showcasing its ability to bridge cultural and religious divides through shared history. The “Dawn of Christianity” exhibition not only offers visitors a deeper understanding of Jordan’s spiritual landscape but also highlights its role in shaping the future of religious tourism in the region.

Strengthening Jordan-Italy Relations

Assisi, a city in Italy renowned for its connection to Saint Francis and its deep religious history, holds a special place in Jordanian-Italian relations. The exhibition also represents a strengthening of these ties, which were further solidified in 2019 when His Majesty King Abdullah was honored with the Lamp of Peace award in Assisi. This award recognized the king’s efforts to promote peace, tolerance, and coexistence in the region and beyond.

The partnership between Jordan and Italy is not just one of diplomacy but also of shared cultural and spiritual values. This exhibition provides a unique platform for these two nations to continue their dialogue of faith, history, and peace.

A Call for Pilgrims and Visitors

The “Jordan: The Dawn of Christianity” exhibition in Assisi offers a historic opportunity to encounter some of Christianity’s most sacred places. Even as it remains popular with tourists, it seeks to be a life-changing encounter for pilgrims and researchers seeking to discover further faith and understanding. It is an invitation to pilgrims, historians, and travelers to discover Jordan’s sacred heritage, walk through its exceptional Christian sites, and celebrate our mutual human spiritual journey.
