Raj brings extensive experience from across the hospitality industry, having worked with leading hotel companies including Accor, Marriott and ITC Hotels.

Most recently, Raj served as Cluster Learning & Development Manager at ibis Hotels Mumbai. In that role, L&D strategy was led across multiple properties, with structured training calendars being developed around guest experience, culinary excellence and operational effectiveness.

Her previous responsibilities provided experience across the complete training lifecycle, from identifying learning needs and developing content to facilitating programmes and measuring their impact.

Training Strategy to Cover Multiple Areas

At ibis Hotels Mumbai, structured training programmes were developed to address several key areas of hotel performance.

Guest experience was included as a major training focus, alongside culinary excellence and operational effectiveness. Service culture initiatives were also driven, including the SMILE framework.

Through these responsibilities, a broad understanding was developed of how learning and development programmes can be connected with everyday hotel operations. Training was not limited to classroom-based activities but was supported through needs analysis, content development, facilitation and impact measurement.

This experience is expected to be particularly relevant in Raj’s new cluster role, where development initiatives will be implemented across three properties with different teams and operational requirements.

Leadership Development to Receive Greater Focus

Across Grand Mercure Bangalore, Grand Mercure Mysore and ibis Styles Mysuru, Raj will work closely with leadership and departmental teams to identify capability gaps.

Functional and leadership skills will be strengthened through development initiatives designed for employees at different levels. The approach will allow learning requirements to be identified more systematically while ensuring that development programmes remain relevant to operational needs.

Leadership development will also form an important part of the role. Employees demonstrating high potential will be supported through development pathways intended to prepare them for greater responsibilities.

Internal Talent Pipelines to Be Strengthened

A key element of the new position will be the development of internal talent pipelines.

High-potential team members will be provided with opportunities to build the skills and experience required to progress into larger roles. Such an approach can support internal career development while helping hotels maintain a stronger pool of employees prepared for future leadership responsibilities.

Development pathways will be created for employees across different levels, allowing learning initiatives to address both current operational requirements and longer-term career progression.

The focus will therefore extend beyond immediate training needs, with continuous employee development being incorporated into the wider growth strategy of the three properties.

Learning Initiatives to Remain Aligned With Business Needs

The learning and development function will also be closely connected with business objectives and guest expectations.

Capability gaps will be identified in collaboration with leadership and departmental teams, allowing training priorities to be established according to operational requirements. This approach is intended to ensure that learning programmes contribute directly to service standards and business performance.

For a multi-property operation, consistency will also remain important. By overseeing L&D across Grand Mercure Bangalore, Grand Mercure Mysore and ibis Styles Mysuru, Raj will be positioned to support common service principles while recognising the individual requirements of each property.

Grand Mercure Continues Its Asia Pacific Development

Grand Mercure has operated in the Asia Pacific region for almost twenty years and has established itself as a distinctive upscale collection of hotels and apartment hotels in key business and resort locations across the region.

Each Grand Mercure hotel is anchored around Discover a new authentic, with individual properties being closely connected to their local areas through design, welcome and partnerships.

The brand’s emphasis on local identity and authentic experiences places employee capability and service delivery at an important point within the guest experience. The appointment of Raj therefore adds a dedicated learning and development leadership role across Grand Mercure Bangalore and Grand Mercure Mysore, while also covering ibis Styles Mysuru.

Accor Strengthens Its Hospitality Network

Grand Mercure is part of Accor, a global hospitality group operating across more than 110 countries.

Accor has more than 5,600 hotels and resorts, along with 10,000 bars & restaurants, wellness facilities and flexible workspaces. Its hospitality ecosystem encompasses around 45 hotel brands spanning luxury to economy, as well as Lifestyle with Ennismore.

The group’s broad portfolio creates opportunities for employees to develop careers across different hospitality segments and operating environments. Learning and development therefore remains an important component of maintaining capabilities across its properties and brands.

People Development at the Centre of Property Growth

The appointment of Shabana Raj is expected to reinforce the emphasis being placed on people development at Grand Mercure Bangalore, Grand Mercure Mysore and ibis Styles Mysuru.

Her experience across Accor, Marriott and ITC Hotels, combined with her recent cluster-level L&D leadership at ibis Hotels Mumbai, provides a substantial background for managing learning and development across multiple properties.

The role will cover capability-gap identification, functional training, leadership development, internal talent pipelines and continuous learning. Service excellence will remain a central objective, with programmes being aligned with both employee development and guest expectations.

A New Learning and Development Chapter

With Raj leading learning and development across the three properties, employee capability will remain closely connected with the hotels’ broader growth objectives.

Her appointment is expected to support the development of capable and future-ready teams while encouraging a culture of continuous learning. The focus on leadership development and internal talent pipelines could also help prepare high-potential employees for expanded responsibilities.

As Grand Mercure Bangalore, Grand Mercure Mysore and ibis Styles Mysuru continue their operations within the wider Accor hospitality network, learning and development will be positioned as an important component of service excellence and long-term organisational growth.
