Finnsnes acts as the primary gateway to Senja Island, a destination often described as “miniature Norway” due to its extraordinary concentration of Arctic landscapes within a relatively compact area. The region is characterised by dramatic contrasts, where sharp mountain peaks rise above deep fjords, and rugged coastlines blend into quiet fishing villages and untouched wilderness.

The area is especially renowned for its seasonal natural phenomena that draw visitors from across the world. Travellers come to witness the Northern Lights during winter and the midnight sun in summer, both of which create unique visual experiences. In addition, the region offers a wide range of outdoor activities, including marked hiking trails that pass through coastal ridges, alpine terrain, and panoramic viewpoints.

With tourism interest continuing to rise, Scandic is strengthening its footprint in the region through a franchise collaboration with Norlandia Hotel Group. This partnership supports the development of a new hotel designed to meet increasing demand from both international and domestic travellers exploring Northern Norway.

The upcoming property will include 154 guest rooms, alongside a full-service restaurant and modern meeting facilities. The development is structured to accommodate both leisure tourists and business visitors, reflecting the growing importance of Finnsnes as a strategic hub for travel and commerce in the Arctic region.

“The franchise concept means that the hotel is welcomed into the Scandic family and gains access to all the benefits of our strong brand. For guests, this translates into a familiar hotel experience with the quality and service associated with Scandic. I am pleased that we once again demonstrate how we can grow with our partners and prove the competitiveness of our franchise offering, while strengthening Scandic’s position in Northern Norway,” says Jens Mathiesen, President and CEO of Scandic Hotels Group.

Scandic Finnsnes marks the second recently added franchise property developed in partnership with Norlandia Hotel Group. Scandic continues to position itself as one of the Nordic region’s leading franchise models, connecting its hotels to a wider network of advantages. This includes integration with key partnerships such as SAS and the Scandic Friends loyalty program, which ranks among the largest in the Nordics, while still allowing individual hotels the freedom to adapt operations to local market needs and conditions.

“Finnsnes and Senja have strong potential within the hotel and tourism industry. The new hotel will become a landmark building in Finnsnes and is expected to attract many guests. Scandic’s strong brand, combined with the owners’ high level of commitment, provides a solid recipe for a successful hotel project,” says Morten A. Kahrs, CEO of Norlandia Hotel Group which will operate the hotel as franchisee.

“Senjen Holding owns adjacent commercial properties to the new hotel totaling 14,000 sqm – a key part of the ambition to develop Finnsnes town center into a vibrant and modern urban district. This will create an environment where businesses play a central role while meeting a rapidly growing visitor market. Through long-term agreements with Norlandia Hotel Group and Scandic, the conditions for achieving these goals are strengthened, while ensuring that products and services for the hotel and tourism industry are of high quality and delivered in an environmentally sustainable way,” says Ole Martin Lund Andreassen of Senjen Holding AS, which owns the hotel property.

Finnsnes is situated along the famous Hurtigruten coastal route, a region recognized for its ever-changing maritime climate and rich natural biodiversity. The area experiences a close connection between land and sea, where weather patterns shift quickly and support a wide range of coastal ecosystems. This makes Finnsnes not only scenic but also ecologically significant within northern Norway.

The landscape surrounding Finnsnes is defined by dramatic natural contrasts. Towering mountains rise sharply from the shoreline, while deep fjords cut into the coastline, creating a powerful visual backdrop. Sandy beaches and forest-covered hills add further diversity to the terrain, making the region a vivid example of Norway’s raw and untouched beauty. Together, these features highlight both the grandeur and the delicate balance of the natural environment.

Scandic has placed sustainability at the heart of its overall business strategy, ensuring that environmental responsibility is embedded across all levels of its operations. This commitment applies not only to company-owned properties but also extends to franchise hotels. The approach reflects a broader effort to reduce environmental impact while maintaining high standards of hospitality across all destinations.

In line with this philosophy, the Finnsnes hotel is set to receive the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, a certification widely regarded as one of the most rigorous environmental standards in the hospitality industry. This recognition underscores Scandic’s dedication to sustainable tourism practices and reinforces its role in promoting environmentally responsible travel throughout the region.
