Katon-Karagay’s sustainable efforts win 3rd in Green Destinations Awards at ITB Berlin, showcasing Kazakhstan commitment to eco-friendly tourism.

The Katon-Karagay District’s Public Foundation for Sustainable Development, located in the Eastern Kazakhstan Region, secured third place in the Thriving Communities segment at the Green Destinations Top 100 Story Awards. This achievement was unveiled at the ITB Berlin 2024 international tourism fair, as disclosed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

This award highlights the collective actions of the community and business leaders in the area towards the sustainable progress of the Katon-Karagay National Park, a site celebrated for its rich biodiversity and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The effort, led by Serik Tolukpayev and Kairat Akhmetov, has been recognized for its effective strategy in maintaining the area’s ecological balance while fostering eco-friendly tourism initiatives.

“Katon-Karagay National Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the priority ecoregions of the World Wildlife Fund. Thanks to the initiative of local entrepreneurs Serik Tolukpayev and Kairat Akhmetov, a fund was created and the sustainable development strategy of Katon-Karagay has been systematically implemented for several years. The results of this work are highly noted in the world’s expert community, which inspires us. It should be noted that every rural region of Kazakhstan has the opportunity to follow the path of sustainable development. This requires a long-term development strategy for the area and joint efforts of society, business, and government in its implementation,” said Serik Zhunussov, Executive Director of the fund.

Kazakhstan’s tourism representatives, including the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Sports, Yerzhan Yerkinbayev, along with delegates from various regions, took this opportunity at ITB Berlin to demonstrate the country’s dedication to sustainable tourism. The event also served as a stage to promote the forthcoming V World Nomad Games, scheduled from September 8 to 14, 2024, in Astana.

Kazakhstan’s participation in ITB Berlin is seen as a significant benefit for its tourism industry. It presents an avenue for the country to build alliances, draw in investments, and present its unique cultural traditions and natural beauty to an international crowd.

ITB Berlin, recognized as one of the leading tourism trade fairs globally, annually draws a vast number of participants and spectators from all corners of the world. With participation from over 10,000 exhibitors spanning 180 nations, and a significant attendance of industry experts and potential investors, the event stands as a crucial meeting point for networking and commercial growth within the international tourism sector.
